Upgrade fog/driving lamps?

Featured Replies

Has anyone managed to upgrade the lower front driving/fog lamps on the Scout?

(-to some that project further infront of the car)

The standard fits just seem to illuminate the areaa close to and around the front end.

Think thats pretty normal for fog lights mate, the whole point is not to illuminate the fog wall in front of you.

Thats what foglights do, that the whole point of them and they should only be used when its foggy in poor visibility, if they projected further ahead then they would be as much use as headlights are and would illuminate the fog and it would be like driving into a solid white wall.

And another.

The whole point of foglights is that they don't light up anything other than the road right directly in front of you.

If they did you'd be blinded in fog as much as you would with normal lights on.

When it's really foggy, you drive with sidelights and foglights, so you're not blinded by the reflection of your headlights on the fog.

I believe it not legal to drive on side lamps and fogs--PC Plod stopped my father one time in his car for doing just that (-- not in the fog though!)and told him off!

I was thinking that for the amount of time we get fog that bad--the lights might be more useful as higher power driving lamps; after all lots of cars don't have front fog lamps.

I agree it's not legal to drive only on sidelights and fogs. Highway Code refers:

226

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

[Law RVLR regs 25 & 27]

We shouldn't take the Highway Code as gospel, a number of amendments have yet to make it into the current edition:

25.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road a vehicle which is fitted with obligatory dipped-beam headlamps unless every such lamp is kept lit–

(a)during the hours of darkness, except on a road which is a restricted road for the purposes of section 81 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 by virtue of a system of street lighting when it is lit; and

(b)in seriously reduced visibility.

(2) The provisions of paragraph (1) do not apply–

(a)in the case of a motor vehicle fitted with one obligatory dipped-beam headlamp or a solo motor bicycle or motor bicycle combination fitted with a pair of obligatory dipped-beam headlamps, if a main-beam headlamp or a front fog lamp is kept lit;

(b)in the case of a motor vehicle, other than a solo motor bicycle or motor bicycle combination, fitted with a pair of obligatory dipped-beam headlamps, if–

(i)a pair of main-beam headlamps is kept lit; or

(ii)in seriously reduced visibility, a pair of front fog lamps which is so fitted that the outermost part of the illuminated area of each lamp in the pair is not more than 400 mm from the outer edge of the vehicle is kept lit;

This clearly states that fog lights can be used in reduced visibility instead of dipped headlights, rather than in addition to them.

Just don't use these lights unless visbility is seriously reduced. And then not ever if you are in heavy traffic.

Around here we call those who routinely use fog lights 'Fashion Victims'. :rofl:

I put my hands up to it, on the drive home from work I need to go through single track country roads, they are brilliant for lighting up the road that wee bit more. However first sight of any car & they are off.
