Fog lights in normal viz driving me crackers

Featured Replies

Now that the darker mornings/nights are upon us, I've noticed an increasing amount of muppets driving with front fog lights on in perfectly normal visibility, as though they are just extra headlights. (and I'm not talking about the DLRs that are fitted to so many cars now)

Apart from being illegal, its inconsiderate and pointless. I'm sick of being blinded all the way over the pennines in this manner...When the vis is down to 100m or so...fine, but not when its clear!!

Does this p*ss anyone else off as much as it does me??

Rant Over.

It's already being discussed about fog light use in several other threads but I agree 100% and wish police officers were more proactive and issued fpn for them.

I bloody hate it!!!!!!

I saw a new shape fiesta tonight with his s h i t t y blue (very blue) side lights on, no headlights on and was using his fogs as his headlights.

So I flashed my fogs at him (pulling the fog switch out and in as fast as I could) and held my main beam on him till he passed.

its one of the least things that bug me round here, every time I go to work at night, people just dont turn full beam off! I don't know about others, but when I see a car comming, I turn down full beam, I dont wait until I'm in their face blinding them before doing it!!!! 90% of people round here do! :( I'd take fog lights any day :(

I can see that being worse for sure, and also totally illegal! I don't come across many 'main beam f**Kwitts' but the Fog light variety more than make up for them.

Pretty much all of my route across the pennines is unlit, and climbing or descending so the oncoming muppets are always shining straight in my eyes....grgrrrrrr.

The most annoying driving related thing for me at the moment, and always has been is total lack or simply not understanding lane discipline.

Drives me mental.

So who was behaving illegally?

You clearly need to think again about the standard of your own driving.

It's not the fog lights that do it for me, it's the bloody idiots who sit at traffic lights/junctions with their foot on the brake pedal.

some cars it's not too bad, but some of the newer Audi's, mercs ets have bright brake lights that i find really dazzaling :swear:

Would that be cars with a DSG box? I am afraid since having the passat with DSG I am guilty of this unless I remember to turn on the auto hold. The car will creep forward without a brake on and as the passat has a gay electronic handbrake with a button, it's not really practical.

The older you get the more you moan about the little things.

I moan a lot

Followed a black fab vas with rear fog light on, on the M6 this afternoon.

Not yet dark and not raining...

No I'm not proud of it at all.

It was just really annoying that he was driving with just his fogs on to look cool.

What I did was at a steady street speed in a very well lit area and just wanted him to feel like maybe he was a div for driving around like that.

What are you any way? A traffic cop or something?

And for the comment that you deleted what you really think of me... What's that mean? Just tell me. At the end of the day your just sat behind a keyboard.

EDIT: I just read your post on the first link you sent me about people with xenons, fogs etc.

You said "When screaming xenons approach I just look to one side".

Errr? What about the road in front of you? So instead of following the road, you look away to the side.

Mmm? And your annoyed at me.

Eccleshill, all you have to do is drive through Bradford and you'll see it is far more than the odd car. The reason that fogs are illegal is that they aren't subject to the same tight controls as dipped/main headlights, as they are supposed to be used in low visibility conditions at a level where fog is least likely to be in front of the car. People do it as they think it makes them look cool, but I find it distracting as it's different and draws my eyes to them due to that. Personally I think that putting DRLs by the fogs was the worst idea ever, as now Police if they were ever to pull anyone (and let's face it, there's not enough about to make it any sort of a threat with a £30 fine anyway) will probably not bother as they could potentially be DRLs.

As with many things this, along with sitting with your foot on the brake as you can't be arsed to put the handbrake on, complete ignorance of lane discipline, using your phone whilst driving as just a result of declining standards due to lack of traffic police to dish out friendly b*llckings to miscreants.

Edit# and BTW way I'm not a perfect driver, no-one is, but I try to respect other road users.

It's railway level crossings which annoy me, quite a lot of the ones round here have a slight slope up to them either side because the railway sits high up on a miniature hill so to speak.. The car sat on the other side will often have just the dipped beams on but because of the slight slope they are on they point straight at you and dazzle the bejesus out of you...

Come to think of it I don't think the fog lights have worked on my pickup since it was resprayed... Must have a look at that when I get round to it.

It's a shame that they did away with the requirement for dim dip headlamps, where, when you put your sidelights on with the ignition on the dipped headlamps come on at reduced power.

Personally I think that putting DRLs by the fogs was the worst idea ever, as now Police if they were ever to pull anyone (and let's face it, there's not enough about to make it any sort of a threat with a £30 fine anyway) will probably not bother as they could potentially be DRLs.

This is why more and more people now drive with front fogs on, because they know that they are more likely to get away with it.

The Fabia vRS is a prime example, having the LED DRL's in the same place as the front fogs but having them double up as sidelights by simply dimming works well for those of us intelligent enough to work out what they are, but for those that don't they will always be seen as front fogs.

Skoda would have been better to have the DRL's turn off completely and use the 5W bulb in the the headlight for the sidelight function.

If it wasn't for the Fabia vRS then it would be easier to differentiate between DRL's and fogs as DRL's tend to turn off completely when either side or dipped headlights are turned on, so if you are approached by a car with what appear to be either front fogs or DRL's on together with either side or dipped headlights then this tells you that they have their front fogs on

Still despite this, as annoying as it maybe and as illegal as it may be I stand by the fact that I have never been dazzled by a set of front fog lights, certainly not enough to warrant flashing main beam at them - potentially blinding them, the car behind them and the car in front of me. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Take pleasure in the fact the stupid drivers with their front fogs on are simply warning you that their driving is of a lesser standard than yours allowing you to steer well clear of them :giggle:

The same could be asked of you, what gave you the right to remonstrate with another driver on their light use?

Not just Bradford - everywhere.

Last 3 mornings this week I was passed, going the other way, in Menston by a white Octavia VRS Estate in perfect daylight with fogs and dipped headlights. Did I frantically flash my lights at him? No! What's the point of shortening the life of my headlamp bulbs! What's the point of shortening my life by pushing up my blood pressure or somebody elses by losing concentration and causing an accident.

I just don't get this "only put them on to look cool"! Where do you get that from? Just because some do dumb stuff to "look cool" doesn't mean everybody else does. How about - they put them on because it they like to light up the road in front of them a little more, or because they want to be sure that eejuts with blacked out windows can see them coming. All those folk who lower their suspension, black out their windows, change the wheels, add splitters, spoilers and countless other modifications - (some of them legal some of them not) do they also do that "just to look cool"? Maybe they do, maybe they don't! Does anyone frantically flash at them in protest?

The whole issue of the legality of front foglight use needs to be reviewed

1. They are indistinguishable from DRLs on many models

2. They illuminate at night on models with cornering fog lights.

They have ceased to be for fog and have become an extra set of lights.

The same could be asked of you, what gave you the right to remonstrate with another driver on their light use?

Oh yea, so sorry, I'm so wrong now. I'll drive around with just my sidelights on and fogs on in the dark from now on and not expect any one to let me know I'm driving dangerously.

+1 - Seems someone has got some beef with the fact he as either

a) been flashed for having fogs on (As they thought the DRLs were fogs)

or

B) drives around with fogs on himself when it isn't foggy.

:giggle:

In response to eccleshill......Why would they put them on for any other reason to look cool (genuine question as i would like to ask the woman i see every morning and every evening with her Saxo VTR that insists on driving all the time with her front fogs on)

I think the point is that by deliberately turning on your front fogs you already know you are driving dangerously. I'm guessing most people who drive with their fog lights are turning them on on purpose.

Therefore an oncoming car flashing their main beam at them isn't going to make any difference other than to blind the person behind or in front.

The very fact they have turned their fogs on suggests that they aren’t bothered what other people think, so each time they get flashed it will simply make them more stubborn about turning them off.

If on my drive to work tomorrow morning I decided to flash each car that has their fog lights on I'd be doing it every few miles!

You were much more dangerous than him by holding you main beams on and flashing your fogs at him, blinding him, anyone behind him and anyone in front of you.

I don't know the set up in the Fabia but if I was doing that in my car I would also be driving with only one thumb on the steering wheel.

Chill out, concentrate on your own driving and stop winding other motorists up as well over things that Just Don't Matter!

:) I assume you are referring to me, the Mazda doesn't have DRLs and I used my fogs for the first time this year on the M62 last week, on the highest part when it was properly foggy.

I just don't get people who get all wound up about other motorists lighting usage.

The legality of it isn't anything to do with you unless you have blue lights on the top of your car.

The coolness has nothing to do with you, do you flash people for having a colour car you don't agree with or crap hair.

Being dazzled is something I don't agree with either, I drive 30 to 40 thousand miles a year at all time in all conditions and have never been dazzled by foglights, xenons yes but foglights no.

Meh, fog lights when misaligned (as they are never checked) or just quite bright are pretty off putting. If someone is blinding me, i`ll stick my full beam on to regain some sight instead of crashing into a hedge :giggle:
