Common headunit upgrades?

Featured Replies

Im soon gonna be wanting to upgrade my headunit to be able to plumb my recently acquired boot build into. .

what's the most common, aftermarket double din or single din?. . .is it easier to fit a double,or single with banking plates around it?. . .

anyone got any examples they can show me

and any advice welcome :-)

Also wanting to know this. Be good to know what's best. :)

Check my build thread. I just bought a new Sony headunit which I absolutely love!

You will also need a £2 part from Skoda to blank a little part above the single-din headunit if you go after market.

thanks.

Iused to be a fan of Sony until I found how much trouble I had with low freq on standard speakers. For last 7-8 years I was always buying Pioneer units. 6 monts ago I bought first 2din unit like this: http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/25/109/281/AVH-3300BT/index.html

Absolutly love it! It has everything you want inside your car. Bluetooth, DVD, and loads music features to adjust it. Geat quality with factory speakers. Very good cross-over and very wide variety of colours and own settings. If you looking to spend about £300 on head unit. I bet you want be disapointed and that will be only one 2 din with so much in it.

A lot of it depends what you want to do with it. If you are working with external amps and boot builds then the main thing you want from a head unit is high voltage 4v+ RCA's, and at least 4 of them (with 2 dedicated for a sub). Otherwise, the most important thing is that it has all of the features you are looking for such as iPod connectivity (if you really have to, personally iPods make me :'( ) or flash drive support, bluetooth connectivity etc... If you are going to be using the internal amplifiers I would go with a brand like Alpine or Pioneer, personally I don't think the internal amps on Kenwood and Sony head units come close. So, if using external amps just get a head unit with all the features you want and decent RCA outputs, otherwise, make sure you get a head unit with good quality internal amps if SQ matters to you, or just get one that fits the bill features wise. I'm currently running a Parrot Asteroid head unit wired to a Genesis Profile Four amp in the glove box along with a 320GB hard drive full of music. Got a set of pioneer components in the doors and a 10" shallow sub strapped and firing into the back seat. It does me :smirk:

Alpine or Pioneer any day for sound quality. At the moment I feel Alpine have the edge on user friendly units, hence I have an IDA-X100

On a slight tangent, my Fab has got a sony head unit fitted in but the radio is shocking, as in I cant get any station besides R1 which is crap, cd player works fine, is it common for the radio to play up once changed or is it looking like wires have come loose on the back and ill have to go digging

Have you got an aerial amplifier?

The standard HU has one built in, where as most aftermarket ones don't

Get on here

It definitely sounds like your aerial isn't getting power or the base of the aerial is faulty. You need the adaptor posted above and you need to make sure you connect the blue wire to either the 12v ignition wire or most head units have an ACC or remote wire coming from the unit on the wiring loom which is often not connected to anything which will also do the job. If you did this when you installed your head unit and nothing has come disconnected it is likely the base of the aerial is faulty.
