Timing belt or chain?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just got a 2007 1.4 (80bhp) Fabia and I'm not sure if it needs the timing belt changed or if it has a chain. It doesn't say anything in the Service book for the change (it lists every other engine needing a belt change).

Its a 2007 1.4 16V BUD engine.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

The 8V is chain driven and the 16 valve is belt driven. Belt driven cams have a plastic cover, chain driven do not. BUD is 16 valve so I think it is belt. I hope someone else will confirm (or not) this info.

16v have two belts.....one from the crankshaft to the inlet (i think) camshaft,,,then another belt from the inlet cam to the exhaust cam.....A full kit from Skoda should include two belts, two tensioners, and I think one idler pulley. There is also the aux belt, and idler pulley etc. There is also another idler pulley on the main belt.B)

every 4yrs or 40,000miles....so yes!......sometimes it is worth getting the waterpump replaced at the same time and also the coolant!...Coolant needs replacing every 5yrs anyway...waterpumps...the impellor can fail...I get mine done every second belt change!..Also replace aux belt as it has to be removed anyway!

If you use the correct G12+ or G12++ coolant then it shouldn't need replacing at all. If changing the water pump, not all of the coolent has to be drained, only to the level of the pump. However If you do change it or get it topped up, make sure that the pink/purple G12+ (or G12++) is used. Do not use the ordinary Blue/green stuff.

I'm like you, I didn't get my pump changed last time, but I will when I next have the belt changed.
