Connecting a Laptop to a TV

Featured Replies

Well my laptop screen is begining to break but ive got no funds until after christmas so can not buy a new laptop straight away. However I need my laptop most days to do work in word and other programmes.

I have a tv in my room which i thought i could connect my laptop to easily via HDMI or USB cable.

When i plug it in and go on control panel then connect to external screen or what ever it says, it wont find any other screen to connect to.

I have watched videos on youtube and searched the web but can not find any answers!!!

Hope somebody can help me please :)

Has your TV got a VGA input?

Also which operating system is your laptop?

on mine if I connect HDMI before turning on mine automatically goes to HDMI cable. Alternatively in control panel mine gives option to connect to external dislay and can choose tv (when using hdmi) but I did spend 10 minutes swearing when I could not get it to work and then realised I hadnt pushed HDMI cable in properly

yeah the simplest way it either a VGA cable, which will require an additional connection for sound, or if your laptop is new enough, you can plug it in via hdmi lead.

when i plug mine in via the vga cable route, i get crappy feedback (poor connection i guess)so i would say hdmi is the best route

might also have to press a button on the laptop to transfere picture, mine F1

You have said USB or HDMI, you will only be able to send video over the HDMI cable. You will have to select that source on the TV for it to work and usually you will have to select the external video on the laptop. This is usually a keyboard switch on mine it's Fn key plus F4 = it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

I've tried this and also other recommendations from above. Still no joy. I'll have to get a VGA cable and try that :(
