DOUBLE DIN RADIO/SATNAV

Featured Replies

Does anybody know if a double din radio unit can be adapted and fitted in a Fabia VRS dashboard 54 plate

cheers

Yep you simply remove the existing stereo and the tray/drawer underneath which opens up a double din slot. Slots straight in.

In my Fabia when I removed original radio unit and the tray/drawer underneath it looks like this:

and installed double din radio with SAT/NAV:

This picture explains a lot to me, last weekend I fitted my Alpine media controller single DIN unit in my VRS, I used the kit from Autoleads with which I had to spend about an hour with my dremmel 'adjusting' my dash to make it fit, however seeing the above dash for what I assume is an LHD car it explains it all. The dashboards for UK RHD cars and European LHD are different mouldings. So at the lugs that Autoleads use to locate the trim they are in different places (in fact the black blot in strip is on the other side in LHD), this means that the trim does not fit UK cars correctly, I would assume that this also applies to the connects2 product too. I made it fit in the end and now it's done you could never tell. It also looks a darn sight better than filling the old trim with a strip.

Yes my Fabia is LHD of course, as I am from Croatia.

Unit on photos above is Audiousource AS8601 - this one:

I have it for about one year now and unit is so far so good.

I can put more photos from installation, together with installation of rear view camera.

This is camera from ebay during installation:

Really like the numberplate light camera.

(sorry to hijack the thread)

I just bought one of these cameras on ebay, a bargain I couldn't resist

How hard was it to route the cables through the tailgate into the car?

From what I have read, one of the hardest things will be remove the trim from inside the boot lid.

I also need to decide on a screen, maybe a double din head unit is the way to go.

I have a few questions about this unit.

Where can I buy one of these I cant seem to find an outlet.

Will it work with the OEM under seat multi CD player.

What system does it use for the maps, and are map upgrades easily found.

Lastly will it work with the Maxidot dash display.

I have the OEM satnav system but its not the greatest thing and map upgrades are ridiculously expensive, would like to swap it out but dont want to lose the functionality I have listed above.

Cheers

Do you have to wire a resistor in parallel with the new LED light to clear an CanBus bulb failure warnings?

It is not so hard to route cables, here is some photos which I took during cable installation for camera:

It is also easy to remove boot trim, just pull it out:

Once you there just go through one side of the roof above doors. Than pass A-pillar and dashboard to head unit.

Sometimes on ebay, I am not sure now ( I ordered it more than year ago).

Not sure about your OEM multi CD player compatibilty with this unit.

For maps it use Igo 8 and Igo Primo and this working good enough in Croatia.

It has wires for can bus connection (that unit can be read with diagnostic tool etc), but I did not connect it as it was not necessary for my Fabia. I don't have Maxidot on Fabia.

No, on Fabia 1 there is no bulb fault monitoring for licence plate light (only headlight on mine).

One small test - camera in Fabia vs parking sensors in Yeti:

...in Fabia on screen by camera

this distance between cars......

and than same distance shown in Yeti:

Any recommendations for the double din stereos then?

That will keep things simple, thanks.

Any recommendations for the double din stereos then?

I have a 3.5" LCD display and a spare cubby hole that I might experiment with for the rear view camera. Would be easy to return to standard if required.

Failing that, I too would be interested in DOUBLE DIN recommendations.

Even better if the DOUBLE DIN HEADUNIT had:

  • Aux in for Camera
  • Aux in for MP3
  • Can use factory CD Changer

Any recommendations for the double din stereos then?

Bump!

I'm looking for a decent double DIN for mine ... I'd usually go for Alpine as I used to work there and have contacts :giggle: but they're still stupidly expensive!!!

Don't want to lower myself to a Kenwood, but they seem to be v.good value for money on the double DINs.

Used to have a W203RI with a KCE-400BT in my old Bora, and that was awesome :)

Even better if the DOUBLE DIN HEADUNIT had:

  • Aux in for Camera
  • Aux in for MP3
  • Can use factory CD Changer

I'm wondering if my OEM RNS DX can do this.

Yes to the last two, with the addition of x car link for your MP3/iPod.

It has an AUX input, which it says in the manual is compatible with a TV. I'm dubious as to the extent of it's use, but if this could be pulled off it would be great!!

Fitted a Pioneer AVH-3300BT over the last couple of days, all went OK. Am well pleased wit the result.

The double din cage was a very tight fit but no real problems. I would recommend to anyone fitting a similar headunit that they route the Fabia loom to the rear, bottom left corner of the headunit aperture before trying to fit the headunit in, then there is loads of space. I popped the centre vents out, it was then easy to see what was going on.

As seen in the photo above, I also fitted a "Sony RM-X2S Remote Commander" as a wired remote that I had it the loft. I miss stalk/steering wheel controls in the Fabia so thought I'd try it and it works very well. The "sound" and "list" buttons don't seem to do anything and the "off" button is redundant too (just hold "source" for a couple of seconds to turn off). But navigating and volume works great, no more fumbling about at arms length trying to adjust the radio!

The 3300BT has a reversing camera input, so I set this up too with a £12.99 ebay reversing camera (now gone up to £33.99) that replaces one of the number plate lights:

med_gallery_35262_351_12507.jpg

A small issue now is that the LED number plate light in the camera looks rather blue in comparison to the other one which looks yellow. I hope to find a replacement for the yellow one that is a better match.

The image is surprisingly clear, even in low light. Having twin reversing lights helps (is this standard?)

med_gallery_35262_351_1165239.jpg

I did a mod to the headunit to provide a rear USB input, wired in parallel to the front socket (only one can be used at any time). Still waiting for a panel mount USB adaptor in the post, but will be mounting it in the glove box for a memory stick.

med_gallery_35262_351_909837.jpg

I was disappointed that the AVH-3300BT doesn't recognise my Samsung Galaxy S2 via USB (configured as a mass storage device) but the integrated Parrot bluetooth phone functionality is superb.

Since the Galaxy S2 didn't work via USB, I connected up a 12v accessory socket behind the glovebox to charge the S2 leaving the USB available for other sources. I should be able to get my music collection on a memory stick.

Finally, I wasn't keen on tapping into the car loom for the handbrake signal (to enable some video and bluetooth functions) so I used a relay to provide the signal to bypass this following instructions

.

UPDATE:

The Galaxy S2 does connect to the AVH-3300BT via bluetooth as a Mass Storage Device but the S2 has to be set to "Enable USB Debugging" and each time you connect it a number of screen presses are required to make it work. This is a little untidy, so the use of SD cards, USB sticks (or Ipod/Iphone) would seem a better choice as a media source.
