  • We all used to stop before the disc brake craze too. I remember ordinary tyres before the radial craze. Before heaters motoring coats kept people from the cold. One slither and crunch at walking pace

  • These are mine:     Same as the one's I'll be using in Summer because I live in Swindon, the extreme Winter weather we get is drizzle and sleet pretty much - same as in August.

  • Don't panic! I've been running winters every winter since about 2006. The michelins replaced two worn out Pirelli snow controls from a set of 4. Still got the remaining two on the back of the 500. Se

I ordered the Superb alloys as linked above and some Nokian AR3s 205/55 x 16 and they all arrived within 3 days - brilliant service! I had a local fitter put the tyres on the wheels and I have today finally got a nice enough day to put them on the car. Not as good looking as the 17 inch Annapurnas but smart enough and on a first short journey they feel pretty good.

Don't particularly want horrendous weather but hopefully I (and the Yeti) should now be able to cope.

Thanks for all the advice.

If I get chance, and can figure out how, I will post some photos.

Not sure about buying Winter tyres for mine when it arrives,..........would have been better going for the " Hovercraft option " when spacing the New model. Feck me it's wet here today..

Happy New Year everyone,

Now where did I park that Ark..?

I know what you mean, but for what it's worth winter tyres are better in cold wet conditions than summer tyres.  Then again, if the water is so deep it gets up to your sills then you're better off finding another route!

Nearly off topic, but here are TIBET II's 'summers' wrapped up for the winter (Skoda wheel covers and wheeled tyre tree from Amazon).

PS 16" steels with Nankang winters fitted still for sale if anyone wants to beat the rush when the snow arrives.... ;)

I've had the winter wheels on for a month now.  But where is the winter?

Some very serious winter tyres you have there!

Illegal in the UK though lol!

No.  You use the exact same bolts you just don't put the plastic caps over them.

What's the reason for not putting the plastic caps back on the bolts when steels are used?

I find it better to put the caps back on - then you know where they are when you put the summer wheels back on in the Spring!

I have little Caddy caps that go over the bolts. So impossible to have both at the same time. That's why. :)

Okay that makes sense - I have steel wheels with Skoda wheel trims so I leave the plastic caps on as they are hidden under the wheel trims.

These have been used on several of my VAG cars, I've had them refurbed and fitted with Nexen Winguard tyres, which are very good. They were on my Scirocco with Michelin Alpins.

Fitted mine last week in between rain/snow showers

Now got to remove them after trading the yeti in this morning.........knew it was a bad idea visiting the dealers :D

Muddyboots they look like Nokian WR D4's. Just fitted those on my yeti this morning (fitted on some 16" alloys)

I guess that's fine provided you only *drive* in Swindon! (And the temperature stays above 7C). :)

Well I do drive down the A419 every day to Cirencester! :) The way I figure it - this is the first 4WD I've owned, it's also one of the least powerful yet heavier cars I've owned, I've never had to put winter tyres on the other cars to get by so I think that weight, comparable lack of power and safe back-up of 4WD means if it doesn't cope better than all my previous cars when it gets a little cold I'll be severely disappointed! This is the only forum I've been on other than a BMW one where Winter tyres really seem to be a thing.

I'd be most concerned about the stopping distances; grip related, 4x4 and lack of power are irrelevant and being a heavier car makes the situation worse.

Whilst improved traction is nice to have, it's the improved stopping distances that avoid the accident.

Well I try not to drive up people's a**e when it gets icy but I know what you mean. The Yeti lends itself to cruising slower than my previous Scirocco/Exeo/530i anyway. I have a feeling that the new 150tdi has the same brakes as the previous 140 rather than the 170 sadly though, I test drove the 170 and it definitely felt a little more eager to stop (I realise that's not a benefit on ice) than this one.

Ready for winter.

Winter Mattehorns mit Nokians put back on TIBET III (should keep Johann happy, one fewer set of black & silver bling Origamis on the roads for a few months...).

Even though it's still quite mild, the grip in the wet after motoring on fading Pirellis is incredible - as is the ability to cut through standing water without a twitch.

Winters are definitely not just there for use in the snow and ice.

True. They have better grip/adherence below 7C...
