Rest of comp is working fine. Done a scan with no problems, used an avg tune up and all is clear. It's xp

can you connect to the internet? From a command prompt, what happens if you ping say news.bbc.co.uk, does it resolved and get a response?

Im not great with comps, what do ya mean by ping? It says its connected and strength is good, just when ya click on the browser icon nothin happens

Ah just googled it, ill try that tomorrow when I get home from work. Thank god for my android phone lol

This could be a few things.

Try the command prompt thing above:

Start > programs > Accessories > command prompt

type

ping bbc.co.uk

(thats "ping" space "bbc.co.uk")

You should see 4 lines with reply from , bytes, time, ttl

sent = 4 received = 4 lost = 0

if all is well

If this connects then your internet connection is good.

Then try safe mode:

Reboot and keep pressing F8 until you see a menu

use the arrow keys to choose safe mode with networking

wait, wait some more and you should get an odd looking desktop - Don't worry all is fine

Try again to connect to the internet using IE.

Depending on the results of these two we can advise what to try next.

Good luck

It might be that the desktop shortcuts have been lost.

Try going to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer" and click on the 'iexplore.exe' (or whatever browser you have installed)

Just a thought.

Sent ya some pm's web ferret

Sent ya some pm's web ferret

Wait, don't force it - I'll get my hammer

Pms responded to suggesting a flush DNS.

If that still doesn't work try this:

1. Go to the command prompt again

2. Type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note If the command is typed incorrectly, you will receive an error message. Type the command again. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt. Then, go to step 3.

3. Type exit, and then press ENTER. You should be prompted to reboot, if not you should reboot and test.

Reet ill try that in a moment and get back to ya

Have you checked the proxy settings?

On IE8 it's under tools->internet options, connections tab, LAN settings button - uncheck all the boxes.

Just Tried it, with no joy. Disabled all add ons too.

Is this a wireless or a wired connection?

If you are using wireless try using a lan cable and re-boot to see if that fixes it.

Another thing to try is to turn off your AVG firewall.

Ok ill get onto that as soon as I get in. It's wireless. I thought if it was connecting though then it was nothin to do with the router? I have been using my phone on the same wi fi network.

Wireless is a dark art sometimes.

I had a vista laptop with a similar problem. It always connected with the cable then the wireless miraculously fixed itself. Its a known bug with vista and wireless. I now have windows 7 on the same laptop and never have the wireless problem.

If the cable doesn't fix it then its a repair using the XP installation CD unless anyone else has any ideas.

Not had chance to try it yet, I have got the original start up disc I got with the lap top. Shall I use this?

NO

Do the cable thing first.

The XP repair isn't straightforward. Get it wrong and you will lose everything. The XP repair is a last resort.
