What have I been up to with the instrument cluster?

Featured Replies

I know Bengie and a few others figured out I was upto something as I've made a few posts about removing the instrument cluster.

Well I've changed all the switches to red illumination, fitted a VW OEM sat nav, blue illuminated climatronic panel and blue illuminated clocks. The clocks also have the full height central display for temperature. MPG, radio station, sat nav directions, animated graphic of car doors etc..

This may seem a bit over the top to some people but I loved the interior illumination in my Golf and after fitting the W8 light in my Octavia I decided to go the whole hog.

No photo's yet I'm afraid but hope to have some up by the weekend.

Awesome  - as pathetic as it sounds, every time i think of driving a different car to mine I always think to myself where are the blue dials

How difficult on a 1-10 scale was the conversion?

Was there any wiring loom modification required?

What did you do about the rear screen and fuel switches as these aren

Most parts are a straight swap from the Golf and can be picked up fairly cheap from a breakers or ebay. Clocks are a little trickier as the casings need to be swapped, you also need to know your way round vagcom and have access to the SKC login codes. The new clocks also need to have 0 miles on so you can set them with your current milage. The centre console switches need to be opened up and the LED's changed. No changes are required to the wiring other than a plug and play loom for the sat nav and 3 wires from the sat nav to the cluster for the centre display.

Cost wise I probably paid approximately

Thanks I seem to remember there was something I was meant to do

So first round is on you tomorrow evening. ;)

But I

so all the mfd functions are in the octy ecu... but not displayed unless you activate them and have the correct dash?

The MFA stuff like mpg etc was in the clock area in the window at the bottom of the rev counter on my standard octy clocks. For the door opening I just had an icon to indicate a door was open but not which one. The Octy has the functionality there though to give full function of the display and I have no error codes in vagcom for the instruments.

Very nice, can't wait for the photos

Does look like too much hard work though!!

Very nice indeed! What exactly does changing the casing involve? Does everything look factory finish.

I'd love to do the same thing in my Fabia... I wonder if the Polo bits are a straight swap also... Hmmmmm

*off to the scrappy...*

Not sure if the same applies to the Fabia without seeing the clocks for myself but on the Octavia as long as you're using like for like (e.g VDO to VDO) then it's the front plastic housing that is swapped as that has the mountings that match up with the car and the 'glass' is angled correctly to match the trim piece. You may also want to swap the clock/odometer adjusters as they are different lengths. I also took the opportunity to add ali rings to the speedo and rev counter and changed the needles to the 'sport' type as found in high spec boras.

I wouldn't recommend using clocks from a breakers as they will not be supplied with the SKC which is essential.

Ed what do you charge for labour? :D

Seriously, I'd be happy to help anyone out with the install and sourcing parts.
