Columbus Navigation system

Featured Replies

Fellow Briskodians,

You may have noticed from another posting that I have just taken delivery of a new Skoda Superb Elegance.

I am still at the early stages of ploughing through the Car Manual and the Columbus Navigation Manual.

I am sure my questions have been covered before but I cannot find such information so I am starting a new thread which may be of interest to other new owners.

The questions I have are as follows:

1) What is the current version number of the Navigation DVD.

2) Should I have been given the DVD for me to hold. My dealer says NO.

3) Should the UK version for the Columbus Navigation system have the ability to see TV as described in the user manual. I am told No as it is only available for a special edition which I am not sure is available in the UK so why include in an English version of the user manual.

4) Is it possible to upload speed camera information onto the HDD and if so how is it done.

Any feedback on any of these points would be appreciated.

How do you see what maps version is installed in the Columbus? (I didn't get a maps disk either). Thanks.

Hi Dobby,

Thanks for the quick feedback.

When I quizzed my dealer about the version the Service department told me that the latest version is 7. I have seen on another forum that V8 is for VW's only at the moment !!

V8 works fine in skoda Columbus.

Hi

Just to comment on the speed camera issue.

If you don't mind paying a small fee, you can join the website PocketGPSWorld and get the latest download, use a program again with a small donation that will enable you to compile a database to put on memory card and import to your Columbus called 'POInspector'.

I know it sounds a lot but once you have done it the first time it is easy.

The only thing it will not do is give you an audible alert as far as I can tell but the icons show up on the map screen.

Regarding point 2, I took delivery of my car two weeks ago and no DVD for me.

Regarding point 4. As long as your columbus has the latest firmware and maps with a version higher than 7.1 then speed cameras are a piece of cake.

1) Subscribe to pocketgpsworld database

2) Download and buy PoInspect0r

3) using the software create a personalpoi.db3 file, import camera data and icons downloaded in 1.

4) copy personalpoi.db3 file to SD card

5) import using menu option on columbus and jobs a goodun.

has all the details.

Hi Mannyo,

I have followed your instructions down to copying the speed cameras onto my SD card but now have a problem.

When opening up the Nav system I have found that all references to POI's have been greyed out so I cannot import the data.

Do you know how I can open up the POI's on my Columbus so I can input to the system?

Thanks

This is a common problem, the .db3 file must be the only file on the SD card. if there are other files then the columbus seems to ignore the poi database. Also the card must be fat or fat32 (ex.fat) formatted.

I haven't even got to the stage of trying to download from the SD card. My problem is more basic in that my system does not even allow me to access any POI's as they are grey out and no means of changing the status.

I did visit my dealer earlier this week and even they were unable to make any headway. I have provided them with some data from the system and based upon this SKODA UK are going to send a new DVD to them which they said would be 7.2. I don't really understand this as my car is only 3 weeks old and should have the very latest of everything. I was told when I picked up the car on day one that I had the latest software which was version 7.

I don't know whether you or anybody else can decipher my data but for interest sake it is as follows:

Delivery part number - 3T0035680E

HW-Version H61

SW -Version 3984

Active map coverage -West Europe

Active map supplied - Navteq

Map version HDD - 7333

Any further observations will be appreciated.

if they are greyed out, all of them that is on the columbus then there is only one reason.

Your Columbus has the latest firmware, however the dealer has loaded an old version of the maps which is not fully supported by the latest firmware. The new firmware requires maps of at least version 7.1, so if they loaded 7.0 you will get no POIs. The file format changed between 7.0 and 7.1, so whilst you can use new maps on old firmware you must use 7.1 or later on the latest.

7333 is V7.0, so this is your problem.

7555 is V7.2

The maps are dealer loaded at PDI, and not pre-installed at the factory.

I think my dealer could do with somebody like you to sort themselves out with Columbus. As no customers get a DVD when supplied with a new car I must assume that EVERY new customer with Columbus will have the same problem as they use just the one DVD to perform the setup.

Based upon what you are saying I hope that the DVD version being sent of 7.2 is possibly the very latest available to SKODA owners. I say SKODA as I believe that there is a version 8 available now for VW cars.

Just to clear my head what is the significance of Map version HDD - 7333 in relation to the 7.2 DVD being sent, if anything ?

I think our messages crossed as you have explained the significance of 7333 which is on map version 7.0.

How do you find out what version of maps you have please? Thanks.

HW - Version H60

SW - Version 3984

Active map coverage - West Europe

Active map supplied - Navteq

Map version HDD - 7551

I got the car about 4 or 5 weeks ago so I hope that is pretty recent software that's installed, I wasn't given a DVD.

It seems that we have similar data on our Columbus but I must say why is it different anyway particularly as our cars were built probably only a couple of weeks apart. My car was built in week 46 which I think is w/c 14th November.

I am hoping that DVD version 7.2 will resolve my problems when installed next week with regard to POI's.

3984 is the latest firmware.

I can not make this work, holding setup button for 5 seconds takes me into the radio service mode and then with just two buttons on screen, 'AM' and 'FM'. Pressing say FM then gives me the signal strength for the tuned station.

Can anybody give a further pointer in how to get the 'Version Info'

This means you dont have the latest firmware, and you will need someone with VCDS to help you by enabling the hidden menu.

Thanks Manny

Before I took delivery they upgraded the firmware and the maps to enable 7 digit postcode.

What firmware number does it need to be to let me see on screen the 'version info'

it has to be 3984, 7 digit postcodes worked fine on 27xx series so maybe thats what you currently have.

7 Digit Postcodes works from 2684 onwards. So it will be at least that.

You can enable the hidden menu with VCDS to see the version info.

Hi Mannyo,

A further update to my problem with POI's.

My Skoda dealer has obtained the 7.2 DVD version and updated my system which now shows I have map version 7551.

The good news is that I can now see the POI's as shown on the DVD and input to my maps when using the SATNAV.

The bad news is that I still cannot gain access to "My Points of Interest" so that I can upload the speed camera database I have downloaded onto my SD Card. The POI box on the satnav is still greyed out so cannot get to the stage of inputting my own data.

I have been in touch with Skoda Customer Services who have started a case on my behalf. In addition I have been back to my dealer this afternoon as requested by Skoda Customer Services and as expected they do not know what to do except send an email to SKODA for advise.

Is it possible that the ability to add your own POI's has deliberately been greyed out for SKODA cars so this facility is only available to VW owners.

What do you think my success would be if I was able to obtain the version 8 DVD as added to VW cars ?

Your view is much appreciated.

Regards
