changing headlight bulbs on vrs

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any problems trying to change bulbs? There doesn't seem to be much room to be able to get in there, do you have to remove anything to change them?

Oli

Its a bit tight, just need small hands

The worst part is trying get electrical connector of the bulb off, which I remember you have to turn. But the rest is fairly straight forward. Its only took me 1.5hrs :D

Haha ok thanks for the help, I will be giving it ago this weekend

Beware - the plastic cover is pretty fragile. On my 2004vRS I broke one of the clips and had to use a screw - in a convenient hole already there as if it was designed for the purpose! There is also a very awkward spring clip underneath on the offside. Otherwise it's pretty straightforward - takes about 5 minutes...

You can take the front bumper off and make it easy to change the bulbs. Thats my method.

I remove the battery cover to do the nearside.

Gives you an extra inch or two wriggle room.

It's a pretty easy job once you've done it once.

Cheers for the advice, I take it the battery cover just clips off or screws off (?)

I have quite small hands so managed to cope. The only bulbs I had problems with are the small sidelight bulbs and trying to twist the indicator bulb holder off. I managed with help using a pair of long-nosed pliers.

Just done N/S dip on my 1.4Tdi - I took battery top off, released clips on front battery leads clip cover ,an removed . Also disconnect battery ( negative first ) to make getting top off easier . Next , remove plastic cover .Next remove connector from lamp ( some thing wedged in the gap twixt lamp and cover helps . Next undo clip ( squeeses off) and remove lamp . NB- wash lamp in meths ,holding by connectors . Then fit in holder ,holding by connectors .If in doubt , remove other cover to see how it locates .Once in place ,replace spring clip ,and connect connector . Temporarly replace leads on battery and check all OK .Remove negative lead and tighten bolts . repeat for earth . Replace lamp plastic backing ,then battery front cover .Finally refit bsttery lid .

NB - NEVER, NEVER work on +ve terminal ,till -ve(ground) lead has been disconnected .

Reason - short negative to ground - no problem .

Short +ve to ground with negative connected - current from battery flows through tool ,resulting in welded tool /damaged battery ,and possible fire .

From memory just unclips on earlier vRSs - but it's virtually impossible on later ones. However the smaller battery on later ones means there more room. Do the other side first so you know what to expect.

I did the N/S dip on my wife's vRS with the aid of a torch Sunday evening. Took less than 5 minutes. In fact one of the easiest and quickest bulb changes I have ever done. Getting the O/S headlight cover off a while ago was a completely different matter. I couldn't work out how to release the spring clip - or even why it is there when the N/S doesn't have one.

It's dead easy on my 2002 1.9 TDI

takes probably no more than 2mins per side, I had to change one last week at night at a petrol station as i noticed one had blown out (philips extreme vision - probably last 12-18months)

I've now replaced them this week with osram Nightbreaker PLUS and they seem even brighter than the I remembered... I think bulbs must loose their 'brightness' over time.

Ha ha.... Im not the only one. The holes where made for a wood screw and a washer lol. Ive used all 4 holes B)
