Fom my point of view I would believe that the reason for the beam to be projecting to the left would be so that is doesn't blind oncoming traffic, but this is only a guess.

That would be true of dipped beams, but not of mains, which should point straight ahead.

I shall have a word with one of our technicians and see if they can throw any light on the suubject (no pun intended) and get back to you.

Just had a word back from one of my techs and he has said that when the PDI is carried out the lights are put on to a standard setting through the machine which is a general set up. To be fair without driving the car at night we would be unaware if the main beam is slightly angled.

Due to the lights being Xenons they cannot be adjusted the same as normal lights and would need to be put back on the machine to see if they can be adjusted.

But adjustments (or PDI checks) that should have been performed by a dealer are not warranty matters. If you know of a dealer that is happy to do work free of charge that another dealer was paid to do and didn't, please let me know who it is. I have been in exactly this situation in the past and been told politely to take it up with the supplying dealer.

In any case, contrary to your view, I think that the problem I have described is quite likely to be a design weakness and not a matter that can be fixed by adjustment. That is what I am asking about here.

1/ Have you actually tried asking your local dealer to look at it? You might be surprised that he is quite happy to do it so that he gets your business in the future. It also may be worth your checking the exact words in the warranty to find out what is covered.

2/ I can't find anyone here who has complained of the same fault. The most common comment is the sharp cut-off in the beam, so I don't think it is "a design weakness". In fact most people have nothing but praise for the HID lights. Have you had a car so equipped in the past?

Had to ask three different dealers until I found one willing to adjust my xenon's; now perfect for me, however I do now very occasionally get flashed, usually when the road is curving or sweeping to my left. Only had one complaint so far in a straight line :wonder: May have to get them to take it back down a notch :(

Mind you I seem to find every BMW I see has either got badly adjusted lights or one out!

Look again. BMW has had them since 2003, and they are on my 2007 BMW. As they were on my 1967 Citroën.

No doubt people will be along in a minute to say the Xenons are better than the halogen lamps. That may perhaps be true of the Yeti, but it is certainly not always true. My previous BMW (E39) had four halogen headlamps with main beams that far out-performed the Xenons on both the Yeti and my present Xenon-equipped BMW.

Xenons are definitely better than halogens on dipped beam.

I had 2 e39 BMW's. On halogen dipped beam they were dangerous. I could not see very well at night. I fitted the Hella xenon aftermarket kit at a cost of about £600 to my first one, a 523i Touring and it transformed night time driving. Having the dipped on at the same time as for main beam was great for high beam as well, even though they were only halogen. I transferred the same kit across to my 530d Touring when I sold the 523i.

I sold that and bought an Octavia, and dipped beam was crap and I investigated fitting Xenons, but it wasn't viable so I fitted Philips Extreme +90% bulbs which were much better, but nowhere near as good as xenons on dipped of my BMW's. High beam was as good because it again had main beam on at the same time as dipped beam.

Now to the Yeti. Dipped beam is much better on the Yeti compared to a halogen equipped Yeti. Well documented on here with many, many people complaining about it. The Plumber has had both, so he is really qualified to make a direct comparison.

High beam is different. I think the bixenons in the Yeti are crap on high beam. It really needs separate high and low beam like the Octavia.

So yes, Xenons are great. But the bixenons in the Yeti are not. It's a shame as it is one of the few failings of the Yeti.

In summary then:

Xenons are better than halogen on low/dipped beam.

Xenons + Halogen on at same time is great on high beam.

Bixenons on their own are not as good as a vehicle which has separate high and low beams which come on at the same time for high beam.

Bixenons are better compared to halogen high beam on their own (without dipped beam on at the same time) Which is how I understand the Yeti with Halogen H4's is equiped.

The halogen lights are not as bright on ether dipped or high beam but I think the beam pattern is better than the xenon's. Had my offside xenon beam lifted, as I couldn't get on with the very defined light beam cut off directly in front of me. Think they may have over adjusted mind as I now occasionally get flashed :S

Likewise I miss not having separate high beam 'driving' lights. Could do with a similar light unit to the Golf V and despite being halogen I think they were a better set-up than either light unit on the Yeti.

It is a common joke in the motoring world that BMW drivers NEVER seem to use their indicators. Even been mentioned on Top Gear.

Note the word JOKE!!

You might also have noticed that at the end of my post I put a smiley face; the one of the laughing face with a hand in front of it. Most people understand that as the posting was meant as a JOKE.
