Code Reader

Featured Replies

Engine light is on so I need a code reader that can do the business on my 2005 VRS.

Don't want to pay as much as the Ross-tech VCDS costs so looking for something simpler that can just read the codes.

Don't want to buy something and then find it does not work on my VRS so looking for a code reader that someone actually has and it works on the VRS.

I have an STS device from Shark but it says no codes although choosing the clear codes option gets the engine light out for a couple of days, so the new code reader will need to be a bit more capable than the STS device.

Any recommendations ?

Many Thanks and a Merry Xmas to you all :)

Have recently bought Gendan VAGPRO for £60 delivered, to put out engine light on 1.2HTP. They were very helpful and quick to reply to my e.mail so ask them your question and if it'll work then get one. A dealer would probably charge about £40 to put out light but the benefit of your own reader means they won't be able to tell you that it's an expensive repair when you can diagnose it yourself.

Alternatively a Briskodian near you may well put the light out with his/her reader for a pint of beer.

Think snap on will cost to much for me, around £50 give or take would be good but if that's not possible I will need to pay as much as necessary as I never put my car into a garage I always DIY.

Don't want to pay £250 for VCDS as it will only ever get used if I have a problem which will hopefully be a rare occurrence.

I've got the cheaper Gendan scan tool for VAG, but that is just to carry in the car as I've got VCDS at home. In your position, maybe take the advice to buy the VAG Pro tool as it covers readiness and, service reset and should work for EOBD on other cars - that is if you find some that are truely compliant, its a bit of hit and miss with some manufacturers when using "non specific" scan tools. For instance, a friend has some older SAABs (9-5s) and VCDS operating as an EOBD tool works okay with it, but his newer 9-3 is proper VX/Opel so it can't make sense of anything, like wise newish Fords can't be scanned with VCDS operating as an EOBD scan tool.

But as your only scan tool for mainly VAG use, I'd reckon that the VAG Pro tool should be okay - remember, Gendan as a company, sell scan tools for a living - unlike some places that just sell scan tools because some DIYers want to buy them.

Thanks for all of the replies.

On your recommendations I have ordered the Gendan vag pro at £59.95, seems to do what I need and works on petrol and diesel vag cars up to 2009.

Cheers

Just some feedback on the code reader (in case anyone is searching for info)

The Gendan Vag Pro arrived quickly from Gendan, plugged it in and selected engine codes and it came straight up with the fault code.

The tool seems to be very good quality with a case and two cables, one to connect to car and one to connect tool to PC with USB cable, I think this must be for updating the tool software but not read the instruction booklet yet.

So to summarise the Gendan Vag Pro works with a 2005 VRS, easy to use and looks like a quality bit of kit.
