Something else I've noticed - turn the adjustment down on the leveling switch and you can run on full beams without being annoying .

Professionally I was always taught that bulbs were planted ( as in Daffodil /Crocus etc) and lamps lit . :wonder:

Anyway ,that over ,few years ago I had one dip lamp fail ,and spotted some "extra bright " of a well known brand (can't remembre name) and at that time doing lots of miles on motorways etc and a lot of it at night - so splashed out . The lamps lasted a few months and I couldn't really notice any extra benefit .So back to cheapos . three years on an I've just had to replace one from a pack I bought cheap at local petrol station .Something else I've noticed - turn the adjustment down on the leveling switch and you can run on full beams without being annoying .

So that thing dangling from my living room ceiling glowing, feckin grew??!! Amazing!

But not on NORMAL BOG STANDARD LAMPS ( I don't plant bulbs in my headlamps -I let missus plant them in garden  ).

Keep up  there

I tried this last night, just out of curiosity. It took a whole one second to realise that even with standard incandescent light globes fitted, it would still be annoying as feck.

And the award for most annoying, inconsiderate driver who thinks full-beam headlights are ok to drive in traffic and with oncoming drivers blinded is... :dull:

No ,mate -it's a LAMP ,NOT A BULB . :wonder: ( As said by another - lamps glow ,bulbs grow :smirk:)

And as for the turn the levelling switch down dodge - I use it in mild fog/mist -never get too much light reflected ,or get flashed to turn lights down ,so ...............but then some of the tips we older blokes find out are taboo to the know it all younger generation .Possibly my mains on with levelling on low is no worse than that from badly adjusted heads or the newer headlamp units as certainly never even had an advisory for healight being out of adjustment ,even slightly .For the purists ,I automatically go to dip no matter what the state of my leveller - part of being on the road for a loooot of years -possibly more than some of the sarcastic posters have lived :D

As an aside - I see most of the "bigger lamp" posters give me the impression that they're male - makes me wonder if this something that the females don't feel the need to go for .

We could turn this into a big philosophical debate, is the thing it is really different because of the word you use to describe it? What distinguishes a woman from a lady?

Oxford English Dictionary states...

bulb

Pronunciation: /bÊŒlb/

noun

1 a rounded underground storage organ present in some plants, notably those of the lily family, consisting of a short stem surrounded by fleshy scale leaves or leaf bases, lying dormant over winter. Compare with corm, rhizome

  • a plant grown from a bulb.

2 short for light bulb

3 an expanded part of a glass tube such as that forming the reservoir of a thermometer.

  • a hollow flexible container with an opening through which the air can be expelled by squeezing, such as that used to fill a syringe.
  • a spheroidal dilated part at the end of an anatomical structure.

Origin:

late Middle English: via Latin from Greek bolbos 'onion, bulbous root'

ok.. i dont remember them being this blue though! lol

What bulbs are these? Is it a HID kit?

Just ordered the Osram nightbreakers for my furby before I read this thread...at £13.49 if they are better than standard I will be happy

I can't believe that I'm getting told how to say something that is said different in another part of the country or have been brought up to say it different!!

You know what I meant when I said 'bulb' so why be awkward?

Anyway as we're on the subject.

I had the headlight adjustment done when the 'lamps' were changed and they were out! The drivers side was lower at about 2" difference from 25ft away.

Even though I changed to brighter 'lamps', I think the proper alignment has also helped with the better vision.

But was never stupid enough to use my main beam, lowered or not, when other cars are travelling towards me.

You're not older & wiser by doing that, just plain arrogant to other road users.

As for the male thing?? It was my wife who suggested that we upgraded our 'lamps' in both our cars as our previous 'lamps' seemed s h I t e.

Everyone please ignore VWD.

If not for the bulb vs lamp discussion, then for the. "you can drive on main beam with your headlights rolled down and get away with it because you're over a certain age" notion.

The advice offered re aftermarket BULBS is good.

So, to sum up, because you have not been caught or flashed by oncoming road-users it makes it ok to carry on illegally dazzling other drivers? :wonder:

If you're older, you'll remember the "Don't dazzle! Dip your headlights" Public Information Film from some years ago? I suggest you look to the past before you get pulled, or worse, if you come across an irate driver you've been following in main beam. Just because you think you're in the right & the rules of the road don't apply to you, doesn't make it so.

Yes, I agree, I'm an "old bloke" and wife is mainly the same vintage, the reason for fitting "better" lamps was to improve the light available when driving on rural unlit A and B roads. I've found that Philips Visions through the years have lasted roughly 2.5 years and they all tend to start to short out so that the element ends up getting "fused" together for more of its length as time goes on until eventually its resistance is so low that it simply melts and goes open circuit. But that is okay for the improvement these bulbs bring, I've always tended to buy them from Powerbulbs - if that helps anyone. One thing though, the latest version that I have just fitted (probably bought last year) are very bright - almost as white as my factory fitted Xenon HIDs on my B5 Passat.

Its a bulb, thats the correct engineering term for a glass bodied incandescent light source, used worldwide. So get down of that horse.

I've had Osram Nightbreaker Plus' in for about 8 months, they are definitely brighter than standard, if not twice as bright, though they do seem to be getting dimmer (or the nights darker)

You FAILED in the answer .

You IGNORED MY STATEMENT about automatically going to dip ,even though lights were on lower setting ,(PERHAPS just to make a point)

AGE don't come into it -but perhaps you moght like to listen to blokes with experience .

As for aftermart LAMPS - ONES I've tried aint lasted too long . Perhaps my aincent eyesight don't need extra bright lamps , which makes me wonder if some of you might need an optician visit. But as said - is this about brighter lamps (and I dont see any ladies needing brighter lamps) or a boy thing - where brighter lamps = smaller boys parts . THINK ON .

Think on???

Probably about 90% of the user's on the fabia mk1 section are male?!? You do the maths about ladies posting about brighter bulbs.

Your also obsessed with your old age?

Your eye sight has deteriorated over the years, fact! That's life! I'm surprised you wouldn't want brighter bulbs/lamps.

If Xenon's were a free option and the bulbs as cheap as standard ones, every car out there would have them.

No, I read it all.

You say age doesn't come into it. If this is the case why mention it? Why mention you've been on the road more than many here may have been alive if it doesn't come into it?

I have plenty motoring experience, and have been running a fleet of 150+ vehicles for about 10 years now so consider myself to have a reasonable amount of knowledge and have pretty much seen everything that could pose a problem to the average motorist.

Driving with main beam on, even with them rolled down will put more light on the road, but what's the point? Around town you will be forever flipping between dipped and main beam will put unnecessary strain on your car's electrical system. You may as well used uprated BULBS. Buy the right ones, and they will last. Use them correctly - ie not switching them on and off constantly or put unnecessary strain on the car's electricals and they will last. The uprated Halfords ones I have in my car have been in situ for about 15 months and around 20k miles.

I drive about 45k miles a year, which is a reasonable amount, granted. A lot of it is late nights or early mornings - don't forget our inclement climate - so if I deem it necessary to have brighter headlights then I choose to uprate whatever components necessary to facilitate this desire.

With regard to my eyesight, it's fine. I wear contact lenses and due to the fact I drive a lot, I make sure I have an eye test annually.

Most women don't care about bright lights on their cars. Simple as that.

You made a **** joke. Well done.

Whatever ridiculous or attempted sarcastic comments you want to throw at me, you can. I'm not bothered. It's the Internet, get over it, get over yourself and remember - there is always someone out there smarter than you.
