LED Dipped beam

Recommended Posts

Quite a lot of pent-up anger about cyclists out there . . . :S which is a shame, sorry about going off topic.

I would be in favour of licensing and insurance for cyclists, makes good sense and fairer to everyone given that they have almost exactly equal right of way (not motorways of course)and the very same privilege on the road (which a lot of motorists forget or ignore).

Conical spill MTB lights are apparently not designed for road use, they shouldn't be allowed (like driving lights).

Cycling at night without high visibility gear does seem suicidal to me. I have noticed cyclists in the city riding poorly but I am out in the sticks myself so I guess my stance was more driven from the threat of being run over whilst alone on a country road somewhere.

If anyone is interested in getting a balanced view (as Silver1011 points out) then get kitted, mount up and ride down a busy main road night or day. No need for padded shorts, you can use Tena adult nappies instead . . . which you might need.

FFS this is supposed to be a thread about LED Headlights not people who are pi55ed off with cyclists!!!! :dull:

To bring it back on topic

:o :o :o I nearly fell off the sofa there thanks Carl !!!!!!! :giggle:

by heck thats some coin that! I fail to see how they could cost more than 50p to make in China like everything else!

There is a lot more to it than a couple of 50p LED's soldered to a circuit board

The costs for retrofit to an R8 (say to fit to a V8 Version) have come down a lot though from when i last looked (about 12-18months ago)

£3769.12 for the Units

£523.40 for 2 x On Board Supply Control Units (1 each unit)

So £4292.52 for the parts. Then your looking at 2-3 hours labour and coding i would imagine. I wouldn't expect much change from £5k :o

I saw an A7 go past with them the other day and they do look very nice and they put a hell of a lot more light onto the road than the OEM Xenons in my Octavia.

LED seems to be the way it's going. In my town where i live they have installed LED street lights! They are very good, some light out of them.

Streetlights will a cheaper install than headlights, because streetlights only have to project the light "down there" where-as headlights will have to project(/not project) somewhere specific. There's all the R&D costs involved too (LEDs, reflectors, heat dissipation <as LEDs generate heat in a different place> etcetcect), so for those (as in most technology cases) who are early adopters, the costs are immense compared to those who adopt later.

e.g. early DVD players were nigh on £1000 from specialist outlets, now you can get them for £40 from Tescos.

Costs will come down and we'll start to see LED become more dominant than HID, probably to the point where all new cars will run LED as standard, especially as there's less electronics to go with them (no ballast etc).

Easy tiger! It's only an online forum, for a minute there I thought the world was about to end.

It must be for some people if they are bleating on about a cyclists light "blinding" them and all the other 5hit that was being mentioned!!!

This thread is about LED headlights. It's a bit like me going into the plethora of winter tyre threads and talking about an aftermarket exhaust. It has feck all to do with the topic.

I'm not trying to stop anyone talking about anything. But if people want to talk about being pi55ed off at cyclists then start a "I'm pi55ed off at cyclists how about you?" thread and talk about it in there.

OR just rename THIS thread to the "I'm pi55ed off at cyclists how about you?" thread and make a new LED dipped beam one since there is very little about LEDs left... :giggle:

So how about those winter tyres then? Mine are great, I could do with an aftermarket exhaust as well, what would you recommend for a PD140? ;-)

  • 2 months later...

Calm down everyone. The LED lights debate is an interesting one, as a cyclist (who has 2 cars 1 VRS octy and 1 Polo and pays 2 lots of taxes and 2 lots of insurance, so don't start!) I have na exposure six pack bike light. I have to run it on the road in low power, which is about 900 lumens and not quite as bright as a car, but if I go to full powrr cars at 1925 lumens car drivers go mental and I admit it's a bit unfair and that is one light. I have Xenons and they are good but if I had 2 of these lights for the dipped beam, now that would be good.

Incidentially, off road on a mountian bike in a forest at speed it is awesome!

cyclists with no lights - shoot them

cyclists who run reds- shoot them

cars who cut cyclists up - shoot them

I run the ay-up's for my mountain bike wich are about 600 lumens the pair and they still blind driver's. I do know what you mean about running the bike lights for dipped beam.

Cheaper alternative might be a retrofit of LED H1s and H7s. Not for use on the road, of course!

(Legality aside for a moment.........)

Do the retrofit H1's warm up fast enough? I thought that there were issues with flashing someone in that the lights didn't get up to temperature fast enough.

The warm up time relates to gas discharge or bi-xenon headlights.

I always thought that one of the benefits of LED's is that they rely on a much lower current draw and therefore generate much less heat...
