Carrying 1200mm x 2400mm x 100mm insulation boards

Featured Replies

Hi folks

The rack I would have used in the past won't fit the Yeti bars because it was made to go on gutters. I've got substantial tie down straps with ratchet clamping so I'm just wondering if I can get away with a slow <30 mph short distance <1 mile trip with 1200 x 2400 x 100 insulation strapped to the roof rails. Has anybody tried it? If so, what was the result?

Can't justify a large roof rack, and will just have to put up with delivery charges and a long wait until January if I can't do it.

Happy Christmas to one and all!

Not something I'd try.

What are you going to strap them to?

How are you going to stop the air getting under the front of them and bending them backwards?

Buy 2 sheets of 6mm ply at the same time and make a sandwich, bind it good and tight and then tie the whole lot down to the roof bars. this will also prevent damage to the insulation from the tie downs. emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

As long as you don't do what the guy did in the photo below I think you will be fine. He managed to drive around too... :giggle:

[For added measure read this post and what it did to the guy's car!!!!! http://richnamy.com/gallery/main.php/classicpics/jetta.jpg.html ]

The sandwhich idea is also good. But as Graham said the biggest problem is stopping the front from lifting up.

Not a Yeti and not insulation, but I've carried 1200x2400x9mm plasterboard sheets (i forget the number, but probably about 10-15) direct on to the roof bars of a Grand Cherokee. I used rope to tie it down and used card under the rope on the edges of the board to protect it.

How many you thinking of? Obviously I didn't have the height, but I had no issues.

I'd also be surprised if it bent back - it's reasonably strong.

I'd give it a go, but then that's me.

The other possibility is that typically people don't actually want 1200x2400. If it's all a similar size you want (say 16"/400mm to go between rafters) could you cut it which may allow you to load in to the back and just travel with the boot lid open? That may be less worrysome (I had 600x2400 flooring in the back of the Jeep too - with the seats down i think it was about 1' out of the back)

EDIT: Oppps - 1200x2400x9m would be a bloody big piece of plaster board!!

I bought a pair of universal roof bars from Tesco, (around £25)

fitted fine to the yeti rails, but I dont leave them on except when needed.

Last time I used them I moved a 7 foot long wardrobe 200 miles from Wirral to Glastonbury.

No problem at all (apart from my fuel consumption).

Insulation boards would be fine if you have something rigid underneath (to stop them snapping in half). :(
