CAR magazine's rating of the Yeti

Featured Replies

I've been buying CAR magazine since September 1989 as I think it is the best car magazine out there. In the back they have the Good, The Bad and the Ugly (the GBU) section where they rate all cars. This is their ratings for the Yeti:

So I'm happy to say I drive the pick of the bunch engine wise (in my and their view!)

Only three stars for the 110 :wonder: in the seasonal spirit; bar-humbug.

Obviously they've not driven a 140 4x4 and then 110 4x4 for 10,000 miles apiece back to back :giggle:

There's little between them and it's not worth paying an extra £800 for the 140 unless your towing regularly; my view anyway.

TP

Yeti aside, I think the 140 engine is a very good compromise between performance and economy, considering the 170 pushes out the same torque as the 140.

Hmmm.. so some believe it seems!

Shows how opinions vary.

Auto Express are always banging on about the 1.2Tsi being the pick of the range and that only got three stars too.

The 170 pushes out 30Nm more torque that the 140, which probably explains the 0-60mph time being 1.5 seconds quicker.

I only happen to know this as I have a 170 on order. It's the closest I could get to a diesel VRS Yeti. :giggle:

Coops - check the torque figures?

258 - 236 = 22 when I went to school

I tend to try to ignore magazine ratings if at all possible, as they are all potentially down to the views of the person testing them

A bit like Barry Norman on films - nearly all the ones he rates are usually quite dire, in my opinion, and I love most of the ones he slates

Each to their own at the end of the day

I am however, beginning to quite warm to the Yeti, so much so in fact that in another 10 years I might well be in the market for one

170hp 350nm

140hp 320nm

30nm difference

22lb ft

Brimma - are you nearing pensionable age?

Gents - apologies as I'm at work, 900000's image is blocked !!!

I recall reading somewhere that the 2.0 CR engine in the Superb had the same torque figures for the 140 and 170, hence they suggested the 140 was therefore a sensible choice. Think it was AutoExpress (?).

Having now checked both the Yeti and Superb brochures online, I know that this is not the case.

EDIT: Have found the AE article HERE which states:

Our pick: The 2.0-litre TDI Elegance is the best buy. However, as with the hatch, we’d go for the less powerful 138bhp version. It has the same torque output as the 168bhp flagship, yet is more affordable to buy. Elegance trim is luxurious, but SE won’t leave you feeling short-changed.

CR 170 with Ben's magic = 400Nm

50 next November, so I reckon another 10 years should see me just about there B)

I misread the label and had 10 of my happy pills instead of 1 - don't worry they'll soon wear off

CR 170 with Ben's magic = 400ft/lbs

That sounds good . Is this what yours is.

Shark is maybe too far away for me though and I should really run it in before considering. B)

Can you advise, how much?

Where do these magazines get there prices from? :wonder:

Probably the base model in each engine size, failing that cloud cuckooland ;)

Yes!

Paid up front in Ben's last Xmas offer - about £350 IIRC?

Offer ATM for remap + free RR: http://briskoda.net/...hristmas-offer/

Don't leave it too long as Ben's going to be away from Feb :( http://briskoda.net/...rk-performance/

I can't speak highly enough of Ben and his team. No bullsh*t and total customer focus. Nice folks too

I'm one of at least 3 Yeti owners who've been 'Sharked' + hundreds of other Briskoda regulars!

CR 170 with Ben's magic = 400ft/lbs

That a very strong increase i.e. 55% on OE output of 258 ft/lbs.

Do you perhaps mean you now have 400Nm? i.e. around 300 ft/lb which is 14% up on OE and more the region I'd expect from a mapped CR170.

I know Ben @ Shark is good; but not that good.

Nm it is :giggle:

My 110 goes very well since we visited a certain place up north, for some reason it now has over 170 bhp and drives very well...can't remember remember the torque figures though.......will put them up later

Am glad I have the 140BHP TDi CR 4x4 spec as highlighted! Good to know that my choice is endorsed by experts.

110 to 170, is that right? That's a 54.5% power hike :o

The 110 engine is exactly the same as the 140, just de-tuned and bar the charger the 170 also ;)

Having owned both a 140 and 110 in 4x4 format, there's little to choose between them in performance.

TP

shame on them slating the 1.2 like that. I agree with BossFox, it's a cracking package.

Another vote for Shark, Ben did my T4 via the STS group buy on brisky last year. Amazing difference and no need to travel.
