CAR magazine's rating of the Yeti

Featured Replies

I have a 140 and having driven a 2wd 110 for a few weeks cant say there is much between them in go department. What is more interesting is that I have always suspected the 138bhp TDI engines in VAG products to be actually a little different according to brand. My 200 kilo heavier Tiguan actually felt brawnier than the Yeti- and Autocar figures too do not suggest anything like the performance gain one would expect between the two cars given the weight difference.Wonder if Audi Q3 -is it ?- is even brawnier- must check. But whatever - cant see the point of seriously quick soft roaders- cos no matter how much power they have they are always stupidly compromised(vast thirst, brakes as big as serving plates to slow down lardy chassis etc )

I don't think a Yeti can be classed as particularly 'lardy' as, give or take a few kilos, it is a similar weight to an Octavia and has similar brakes too. ;)

Alright for some who might have uprated their brakes :D

My 110 4x4 has exactly the same FS-III brake calipers (yes identical part number) on the front as my lads 2003 54bhp Fabia I HTP Classic :o No wonder she takes some slowing down  Oh there are also fitted to the wife's Fabia II TSI. Only thing that differs is the size of disc.

Fabia I & II - 256mm disc

Yeti 110 - 280mm disc

shame on them slating the 1.2 like that. I agree with BossFox, it's a cracking package.

By the way those disks look unused - how do you stop Brimma???emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif Parachute like the 600bhp vRS?

My 16" winter wheels wouldn't fit (I think), otherwise I would. Will have to put up with the Octavia vRS & Yeti CR170's 312's instead, like Bahnstormer.

I was one of the first to visit with their Yeti, Sir Ben up in Mansfield. Well worth the trip. For those of you new to Briskoda, if you click the link in my signature, there is a link to what Ben did to mine. I have no idea what mine is pushing out power or torque. I just know it is "adequate" to quote Rolls Royce. One day I will pay him another visit and get it up on the rollers. I do need a day off work with the silly schedule I have had recently. Good excuse I think.

Give me time Bryan, give me time.

My Yeti doesn't arrive until March... ;)

Are you running spacers to clear the callipers?

No need for spacers - the Compomotives are ET42 instead of 51, and the spokes have a good bow on them - probably could have got away with 43 or 44

Don't you swear at me, Graham B)

The 312's on the 170 will bring it to a stop in very short order, as I found out when when some idiot pulled out in front of me.

Ought we not get back on topic?

No , the Yeti is quite light by softroader standards but all modern cars are ludicrously heavy. The Caterham is an extreme example but you would not believe the way that 500kg stops and steers compared to a typical modern car. No power steering, no power brakes ....

OK: can I take exception to Car's use of the term "parts-bin"? Everyone knows that cars from different branches of large automotive conglomerates share lots of common platforms and parts. Do they call a SEAT Leon a "parts-bin hatchback"? It's almost as if they couldn't resist slipping in just one snidey comment, because it's a Skoda.

Not all weight is bad. Modern safety systems are good, but there is a weight penalty for them. I'd rather have a crash in the Yeti. ;)

Overall the Yeti is surprisingly light. Our 1.2 DSG is less than 200kg heavier than a Fabia estate with the same engine and gearbox. For a noticably more substantial vehicle I think that's quite good considering it includes extra equipment too. Sure you add more weight in with a 4x4 system, but that's less than 200kg too. A 4x4 Yeti is still lighter than many 2wd people carriers.

Indeed. A fine car the Yeti is for sure! Compacious and Lighable! (Compact and spacious yet light and able!)

As long as it is not that vibrant Miami Blue as the one I had it can't be bad. But if it is Miami Blue it probably is the very same hearse I had! :giggle:

I think it is.....complete with panoramic fixed (why?) sunroof.emoticon-0149-no.gif

How anyone can put up with driving a manual car around London I have no idea. It is awful all this changing gear malarky. But it is nice driving a petrol, even if it sounds a bit gruff, it is almost silent when stationary. Makes me want a 2.0tsi DSGemoticon-0140-rofl.gif, though I would put up with a 1.8tsi DSG.

That gruffness means it is a 3 cylinder. I HATE the sound (sorry NON sound) a 4 cylinder makes. Such a nothing sound that. But a 3? It sounds like a Porsche 911! I love it. I thrashed my 3 cylinder Audi at every opportunity to hear that gruff sound it made! I also love the sound of a five cylinder. So a 1,8 or 2,0 Tsi 4 cylinder Yeti? No thanks. Give me a 2,2 five cylinder Audi engine in the Yeti any day! But a petrol 4? Never.

The three pot TDI Fabia/Roomester sounds really good.

I'm told the twin pot FIAT 500 'Twin Air' is a rorty little number too.

However, I read recently the new BMW 328i is a 4 cyl (not six); argh! :giggle:

Son has an old Fabia I 3 cylinder 1.2 HTP (54) and the wife a Fabia II 4 cylinder 1.2 TSI (85). Both are cracking motors and do tend to growl at you under acceleration but at idle they are fairly quite, particularly the TSI. Oh and their both Skoda engines ;)
