Painted alloys

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Having taken receipt only 2 hours ago, its time to mod

Unless it a bad mod....

So im thinking of having the alloys painted (black to match the car)

but im already having second thoughts... I understand if I kerb it, I would have to touch up, but im wondering about going to the hand wash who power washes the alloys after spraying some stuff onthem (please dont suggest I do it myself, its not gonna happen...)

Also, any ideas how long it will look good for? Because if it looks tatty in 12 months, its not happening

Thanks in advance

Ps

Im having this too...

If you decide to get the wheels painted don't go for the cheapest quote. A lasting finish is all about the prep work and the more effort and time spent on them will get you a better and more durable finish. Saying that if you kerb them it doesn't matter how good the work is you'll still end up with nice silver strips which will stand out like a sore thumb.

The wheel cleaner used at drive-thru hand car washes is often acidic. Over time excessive use will damage the lacquer so the finish will loose its shine. They also have been known to fade and stain the plastic wheel nut covers too.

It is possible to polish/seal your alloys yourself prior to washing them which will offer additional protection but if you ain't gonna be washing your own car then I doubt polishing your wheels will be high up the weekend's to-do-list!

Not keen on the SuperSkoda honeycomb grill myself, I much prefer it when the original grill is de-chromed and then colour coded, should look very stealthy on a black vRS.

Remember to post pictures of your new ride!

Love the black and wish I'd gone for it instead of another white one! I would suggest just colour code your grill surround [only works on black cars for me] or have it wrapped in matt black. Not a fan of the honeycomb grill, it's too much.

Painted, power coated, whatever quality of finish, if you kerb it you'll **** it up.

Powdercoat is normally a more durable finish, however mine are painted (only cost 180 quid IIRC) and they are fine after 55k miles (other than one small chip where ex-work-colleague-numpty whacked a pothole). Never needed any special cleaner for them, just soapy water works fine.

I'd go for anthracite/graphite colour against the black, and as others have said, that aftermarket grille looks a bit rubbish - i'd go for a simple colour code of the OE grille or wrap matt black.

I personally quite like the grill, gives the car a very aggressive look.

+1 for the anthracite powder coated wheels, had my winters done and I think they look really good, especially when clean and shiny.

PS, I've had lots of bilberry on mine since I had them done and they still come up really shiny as soon as I pressure wash it off :)

You can tell your hand wash place not to spray with acid 1st

Anthracite it is

I have just ordered the honeycomb grille. Not sure how soon it will arrive, but thanks for the chester link too.

And another good suggestion "ask them not to spray the acid  "

thanks all

(piccies to follow)

I started a wheel refurbishment business 6 years ago. Started out doing mobile repairs, As someone has already mentioned with a mobile service the key to a good repair is prep work. However you will find that this type of repair will chip easily. I now only offer a complete wheel refurbishment, the full process can be found here http://www.mintalloys.co.uk/full-alloy-refurbishment-process.html . We use Powder coat primers, wet paint for the base coat and finally an acrylic powder coat lacquer. This will give the most durable and longer lasting finish.

Hope this expalins the difference.

The Honeycomb Grille arrived today :)Obviously I held it in place as soon as I'd unwrapped it. I kind of get the look, but I'd rather wait until its fitted

Getting it sprayed and fitted some time next week. Also getting the alloys sprayed Anthracite

I need to get it washed and Photographed this weekend (The "Before" shots)

You getting the actual honeycomb grille fitted Greg? Or just the surround? Which grille did you go for?

Well that was a HUGE disappointment !!

The Grille turned up, I took it to the Spray shop, they pointed out how poor the finish was - and also that it would look even worse when painted. They also pointed out the difficulty of spraying a one piece unit around the edge but not the Honeycomb grille . He also explained that you couldnt use filler on the material that it was made out of (ABS possibly)

I looked at the finish - and now i see the bumps and lumps. (My Bad)

So I decide to send it back to Superskoda

But it will cost me £50 in postage (quote from the Post office)

If I send it back, I get €99 but it costs me fifty quid !!

I would make more money selling it on Ebay!!!

for now its going in the shed unused !!! (You live and learn !!!)

Wot bookshop was that!? They can't be very good if that's wot they said. Where are you? Anywhere near Sheffield Because I did mine no probs smoothed it all then painted it.

Greg, any chance you could send me pics of the grille, I might buy it off you if my bodyshop guy thinks he can do something with it.
