Heavy steering after lowering

Featured Replies

Having just had my shocks and springs changed my steering feels a lot heavier. When i first collected the car my mechanic had not had time to check everything, at this time the steering was a little heavier but ok, a week later i booked it in to be checked over and now its even heavier.

The new springs lower the car by about 1.5 cm, does anything else need re-seting apart from tracking.

Also the self centering of the steering isnt as good.

Any Ideas

After having my Eibachs and strut brace, the steering was no heavier, but much more direct. I'd suggest getting it hooked up to a VAG-COM or similar and see if any faults have been logged. Not sure if the Fabia has a PAS fluid resevoir as it's electric rather than hydraulic, but worth checking that that's got fluid in it if it does have one :)

Btw, I just got the tracking done after mine and it was fine.

As you seem to know, you'll need to get your tracking sorted, they should centre your steering wheel then.

Get them to have a good look around. Ask your mechaninc if he is sure he put the top of the struts back properly - I'm not sure about the Fabia/Octavia but many cars have a bearing in the top.

You can use VAG-COM to change the weight of the steering on the Fabia vRS so you can make it heavier or lighter but do get the tracking checked as many people don't bother after lowering and end up with uneven tyre wear.

That's probably also down to the camber being wrong, once the car is lowered.

Yep

Did they do a full 4 wheel alignment after they fitted the suspension?

Tracking was adjusted a month ago when i had new tyres, all was fine then.

After fitting of new shocks and springs, it felt ok, pulled a little more to the left, took it back for them to fine tune and now its heayer, pulls to left and gets heavier at speed. I believe they just did a normal tracking.

The only other ting they did was repair a kinked/nicked wire on an abs sensor which was giving a warnig on the dash (skoda wanted 500 quid for a new one).

Could this have changed the electronic weighting on steering car is a 1.9 tdi?

Thanks

Does anyone know the correct camber angles?

THEY ARE GOODGUYS AT JP GARAGE HAMPTON COURT!, looked after my gti golf well

So they did the wheel alignment before the lowering of the car ?

If so get them to recheck it because as you lower the car it will change the suspension.

This is basically what happens before and after. The camber/wheel alingment may change when lowering a car.

The question is, can the camber be adjusted anyway? I'm sure I read somewhere that it could not. Tracking obviously can, but not camber I think. And it's more likley to be camber change that's made the steering heavy than tracking - maybe even castor angle, though that's not adjsustable either if I recall...

i think your right saying camber cant be adjusted. The fact it was sort of ok when i first got it back, before they adjusted the tracking makes me think another tweak to the tracking is called for.

Im not too worried as im getting 63 mpg

Thanks all
