Oil Quality

Featured Replies

I'm gonna do the 10k/annual service on my Furby.

It's the first time I've done my own service and I'm confident of my basic mechanical skills for this.. but....

There's sooo many oils that meet the right spec... Is there actually anything between them? Or would buying the cheapest I can find that meets the VW spec fit the bill?

Can anyone honestly say they've noticed the difference between oils? It's a difficult thing to quantify as new oil will always feel better than old oil.

It probably mirrors the trusty supermarket vs. branded fuel debate in that the only real difference between same spec but different brands of oil is the additives and agents added.

I just picked up 5 litres of Shell Helix Ultra (VW 504 /507) from eBay delivered for £29.99, this is the same price as for 5 litres of Comma oil at my local motor factors.

In theory, as long as you use the correct grade use any brand as they are intended for your engine. Some people are Brand Fussy and tend to stick with what they are familiar with.

It's like some people insist on Nike branded trainers but the same trainers are also branded by other names. Me, I couldn't care less, I'll use the correct grade whatever name/logo is on it.

When I did mine earlier in the year I just went to the local dealer and asked for a deal on the parts.
