Not too many estates compared to standard car. Is this the looks or does the standard car drive better?

I think they just made less VRS estates than hatchbacks (most of the silver estates went to the police)

Because the estate is a bit less ridged than the hatch. The hatch also has cross members behind the rear seats, which the hatch doesn't have (as it ruins the loading space). It was felt the 16s caused the car to feel and handle a bit better.

tbh i'd have preferred if the hatch had 16" - easier to find tyres, cheaper, smoother, less critical of alignment, probably just as much grip

only downside is not as precise on smooth surfaces but tell me the last time you drove on one of those ... !!!

Don't think I'd bother with it.
