Please tell me about updating my CAN gateway

Featured Replies

Hi folks

I plan on fitting an RCD510DAB head unit to my 2007 car. I don't know the build date, but it was registered in March 2007. I currently have a Stream mp3 fitted which displays climate info - its not essential that I retain this feature or have any OPS functionality as I am installing a Cobra PDC kit, but I am concerned about battery drain which I understand can affect some cars with updated head units.

I am likely to have to have the gateway updated and what's involved?

Thanks in advance

Yes, you will need a newer Gateway.

EddieNL normally has some for sale and can pre-code them for you if you don't have access to VCDS.

You will be a bit of a guinea pig as I haven't seen one of the DAB units fitted to that early a car so you may come across other coding/compatibility issues.

Do you have Maxidot and a MFSW as you may need to do some jiggery pokery to get them to work, if they will work at all with that new a revision of a RCD510, which at a guess uses CAN BAP for the Maxidot integration, which your car doesn't support.

You may also have backlight issues in that it doesn't come on until you turn the headlights on.

Good luck and keep us all posted on progress!

+1 for EddieNL - I got mine from him (and after sales advice as well).

Best way to get to the CAN Gateway on an '07 car (if it is not behind the glovebox) is from the engine bay (see this thread).

Follow this tutorial to remove the wiper arms and the wiper motor to access the black cover just by the driver's side bonnet hinge. CAN is under that.

Much easier than removing interior trim and relay panels, etc...

If you need more advice, just let me know.

EDIT: Misleading information changed

On a early 2007 model it may still be behind the glovebox rather than behind the relays. I would take a quick look there first before going to the lengths of removing the wiper arms and motor etc...

Thanks lads.

I do have Maxidot but no MFSW. What are the effects of not upgrading the gateway? Is it necessary for the thing to actually function, not just to stop it flattening the battery?

Oh and what gateway am I likely to need? As said I am retrofitting Cobra PDC but my current Stream MP3 displays climate info.

You won't get climate info on a RCD510 without fitting a FL climate unit - not worth the effort.

Just get the latest gateway from EddieNL.

Agree that it would be best to check behind glovebox first (as this is a 10 minute job), but mine is an early 2007 Octavia as well (which had K revision CAN Gateway fitted above relays).

Oh and what gateway am I likely to need?

Anything after 'K' (but not a 'P') to avoid battery drain, but it may be possible to upgrade the software on certain versions (see Ross Tech Wiki for more specific info on compatible gateways for RNS510 units / Columbus).

All we know is it was registered in March 2007, we don't know the build date or model year.

If the OP scans with VCDS for the revision of the CAN Gateway we might have a better idea if it is likely to need replacing and where it is likely to be located.

Although, if it has a Stream MP3 fitted it is likely to be a 2007MY so is likely to be behind the relays as you said.

Have a look at these websites / forums:

RNS 510

My GTI

VW Navi

All of which I have used but none have the member support and input that this forum has. (My GTI does have quite a bit of useful info on there though).

I currently have the F version. Is Q OK for an LED version of the Columbus?

If you take a look at the Ross Tech Wiki article on retro fitting Columbus units, they are pretty certain about CAN Compatibility & Columbus.

Take a look and you will find the answer.

Get in contact with Eddie_NL on this forum - he has had quite a few for sale in the past and offers very good service.

If anyone wants me to change a gateway for them, I know how to do it now following me successfully doing one on a mk5 Golf this morning. Bloody tough to get the box out from above the clutch though. My left arm feels like I have carpal tunnel syydrome / RSI.... The VCDS was the easy bit (ish)

Golf location is generally different to Skoda though!

Octavia's are either behind the glovebox (pre-'07) and above the relays / fuses (early-'07 onwards). This is by no means definitive, but is a good indication.

Getting behind the glovebox is easy (6 torx if I remember) and getting above the relays is easier by going in from above / outside (link is for a Golf as well but was almost identical on my early pre-FL '07 Octavia estate) if all you are doing is swapping a CAN unit over then recoding.

If anyone in the Herefordshire area needs this doing, PM me as I can swap & code Octavia gateways pretty quickly now.

I finally found the gateway I was looking for, 7N0 907 530 C

Having a LH car what has been written on briskoda wasn't enough for me, so here it is (the location and a tutorial) http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a5/rcd510-rns510-swap-vw.htm

For RH Octavia II and Golf V:

Nice video tutorial. Well done.

I suppose the bottom line seems to be that there is no standard place for the CAN Gateway!

Octavia II are generally behind the glovebox (pre-2007) and above the relays (possibly from early 2007 onwards).

Golfs seem to have it be above the clutch pedal for pre-2007 and above the relays from 2008.

Mine was most definitely above the relays.

Finally replaced mine about a week ago. It was above the acceleration pedal (remember I have a LH car)
