Car Rig

Featured Replies

Small intro...

Photography has been a passion of mine for many years now. So much so that when I was made redundant, I decided to start my own business last February(2011 and my work has proven very popular. In between IT contracts I have been very busy with photography, and also covered most of the events at Castle Combe Race circuit through 2011. The pictures were mainly used for their Facebook and flickr albums.

How the rig came about...

I have seen a lot of car rig photography and really wanted have a go. Between me and my Father-in law, we managed to fabricate a solution which enables use to clamp the rig to a car on both sills connected by an aluminium pole, followed by the hinge and another pole (which can be seen in the below images). We have since created mods and adapters to enable us to clamp it to different cars and positions safely. Here's the rig:

Don't worry, the car is only travelling at about 2mph ;

I even made a section to fit the tow bar bracket:

All questions/comments welcome - thanks for looking

Very smart. I've always wanted to have a go at that kind of shot but am not sure about lashing my camera to the car

Love the photos and the rig but as said above I'm not to sure about lashing the my camera to the car. Knowing my luck I'd get sky, tarmac, sky, tarmaac as the camera bounced down the road. That or I'd break some passers by's leg.

Thanks :) The car is only travelling at about 2mph, there is minimal chance of the camera coming off. When I am shooting, I also walk along side the camera with the remote trigger.

I always like to see rig shots but can't help thinking there's quite a bit involved in setting it up with each car compared to this easier option.

P.S. Nice shots though.

Preparation is key, and we have got the rig setup down to about 10 minutes per car. We did consider the suction cup idea, however the risk of it falling off and the post production times are greater than that of the under car rig. Not only that, we are able to extend the camera further from the vehicle and lower to the ground with the current setup.

Nice work lutenertic!

Id like to see some more detail on the construction of it, and maybe how it mounts if you wouldnt mind sharing?

Okay sure, I get some snaps of the rig and post them up :)

Thanks mate, looking forward to seeing more.

I made one a couple of years back similar to johnboys post.

Wouldnt mind putting some money into it to get an undercar rig though.

Some beautiful shots!

Any update lutenertic?

This is just brilliant mate. Always wanted to do something like this!!!

would you mind sharing 'component list'? :smirk:

Excellent shots.

How did you find it setting up a photography business? Myself and my friend would like to get into Wedding photography but really have no idea how to get into doing it with people trusting us with their wedding with no previous 'professional' feedback.

I have a small portfolio of photos which i have taken as a guest at weddings but obviously the problem with these is that they are never set up by me and are always at a side angle from the official photographer. Everyone has loved the photos i have taken though!

The best way to start off is by doing it for mates, and really showing what you can do. You only need two of these to get the ball rolling.

It's a really competitive business though, so you need an edge!

We've been looking for a wedding photographer, and I'll tell you there are loads of crap photographers out there charging loads!

As TimFok says, loads of people doing it, but you need to be good! :)

top work photos look great

assume that regardless of how good the rig is you still need the relevant photoshop skills to remove the boom though?

superb images and cool rig :)

I use two Manfrotto suction cups and an extending Manfrotto Autopole with some superclamps...flexes a bit but have never had any issues. Quite cheap and no fabrication involved. The Audi S3 on my website was shot with that rig, as were more UK mag covers than I care to remember.

If you position your rig right (I sometimes use little extender poles to raise it up off the car a bit), you've not got much more than a bit of sky to clone in. I normally get away with just using CS5's content-aware fill nowadays.

Could I see some shots of the bit of the rig thats under the car? love to see how all that works .

Wanted to do this for ages but dont fancy the risk of it falling off!

cheers

Some people do under-car with big strong magnets.....might be worth a shot?

I am looking at building a car rig and love this idea, a friend on the mk5 forum has done a similar thing but the cost of everything he used is very expensive, how much did your rig cost you to build if you don't mind me asking?
