I've definitely got a leak into the footwell

Featured Replies

Folks on the subject of cars misting up, I was having a poke around the car and noticed there was a hole in the front n/s door seal. New door seal duly ordered for TPS, I fitted this yesterday, which was fairly simple even for an idiot like me. I noted this morning that the car hadn't misted up quite as badly as it had prior to the seal being replaced, but I did notice that the familiar small puddle of water had collected on the rubber mat in the passenger side front footwell. There is definitely some water ingress and it appears to trickle down the sill trim (inside) roughly in the same position as the edge of the bottle holder in the door pocket (these aren't related, that's just a reference point).

Is there anything else I should check for leaks? There's definitely water ingress, 99% certain it's rainwater rather than the misting being cause by being "just a damp car". Could the pollen filter be leaking water which runs down the trim, or would it just drop onto the floor? I used my car briefly yesterday and didn't carry any passengers so there's no way water would have been walked into the car by a passenger.

All help and advice gratefully received.

Ensure the floor well has been layered/ covered with good absorbent material and suggest the next sentence.

Make up a bottle of water with some bright coloured food dye and pour/ spray in through wiper grill below wipers and check for leakage.

Possible leakage through Pollen filter/ wiring harness hole, and Sunroof as possibles.

Good luck.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Pulling out the pollen filter will tell you if it's coming through there as the filter will be wet/damp, as will the leaves and debris attached to it.

Could be the seals on the door trim liner. This was a weakness with the Seat Leon - the foam seal deteriorated over time and started letting water in - so when it rained the water bypassed the electric window mechanism (still sealed by black plastic) and made its way into the footwells.

I'd take the door trim off and see if it's coming through the carrier.

Thanks guys I'll have a look at that.

I assume if it's the door trim seal, the fix is a new door trim or can the seal be replaced independently?

The carrier would need resealing.

I got some sealing gum from VW, AKD497010 04R10. Was about £25 I think, and you get loads. Still got loads left, where you based?

In case your on a budget:

I got gutter sealant for £1 from a pound shop for my ancillaries carrier on both rear fabia doors worked a treat threw 2 of our worst winters before sold  was good stuff bonded to it perfectly quick setting and worked to extreme temps and flexible when set

And how much was the door seal? Mine leaks too.

I am in Leicester city centre, that taking the carrier off and refitting looks like a biffer of a job!!

I paid £22.75 for a new door seal from my local TPS. I am not sure if it was actually leaking, but it did have a hole in it which could have got worse and caused a leak. Maybe.

I have a similar problem (I think) in that when driving in rain I get a trickle of water in the passenger footwell. There seems to be an accumulation of water in the door threshold seals attached to the body work which appears to be coming from the front edge of the door and puddling before spilling over into the footwell.

I'll check my pollen filter as well.

By door trim do you mean the seal or the interior door 'card' panel?

What / where is the carrier?

Sorry Tech1e - you know I'm new to all this terminology...

Take the door trim off, the interior part you rest your arm on etc. behind that is a metal panel that holds the window regulator and motor etc, it's probably leaking from the foam seal in between the door and the carrier. Have a look in the Fabia I section at door leaks, same kinda thing.

Thanks to both of you. I'll have a look at the weekend (if I get the wife's Fabia sorted)...

Thanks for that. I was driving in horrendous weather last week and it dripped in a few times. Might take the plunge as it were. If you were in West Yorkshire I could have given you some sealer. It's really not as bad as you think - I'm terrible and I managed it!

Thought i might have found the cause of my leak but its raining again and the passenger front footwell is soaked. Water is definitly getting in around the plenum area and running down the left side of the bulkhead. I had the wipers and plenum cover trim off yesterday but couldnt really see where water is able to drain out of the plenum apart from a gap between the inner and outer wings. Does anyone if there are any other drain holes? Also had the pollen filter out today but it was bone dry.
