Just quoted a £25k car covering £15k over 3 years and that comes out at £168. Reality is you i doubt you would need £15k of cover. You need to work out what you think your car would be worth in 3 years time and cover the difference.

Just checked depreciation for a Yeti Elegance on Glass's Guide, which is what I think the insurance companies would use if there was a write-off?

From a starting price of £23,675, there are yearly drops to 13701, 11250, 9250 and 7900. Sheesh. Anybody want to sell me a one-year-old Yeti Elegance with average mileage (about 10,000) for £13,701?

Based on this, and a four-year term £15K (or maybe £20K) looks about right for the gap ...

At the moment it's looking like a choice between ALA and EASYGAP. Anybody got any strong feelings either way about either of them?

I bought mine from ALA through autotrader gap, made it a little cheaper if I recall, much research was done at the time(last august) and they came out on top, don't ask me why or what, but i felt at the time it was the most informed decision.

I've been given a purchase price for my yet to arrive Yeti of £4995.00 after 4 years and 106k miles. So are those figures right?

Don't forget quidco if going through ALA.

I guess 106K is way above the average mileage that Glass's use (I think it was 10K a year, or maybe 13K, I forget). There is a premier version of Glass's that lets you specify mileage and options fitted, but I assumed that would cost so I just used the free version and went for default mileage.

Still, if your car has just been running up and down motorways and is otherwise in good nick you may have yourself a good car for a very good price!

ALA are a bit more expensive (£210 versus £189 for 20K's worth of RTI), but they don't apply the "110% rule", whereas EasyGap do. EG on the other hand accept payment via Verisign, whereas ALA seem to use PayPal - I've never been comfortable with PayPal.

The 110% rule, in case anybody else is thinking of GAP, says that if your invoice price is more than 10% higher than some figure that Glass's produce for the cost of your car, then the (lower) Glass's price is what is used when calculating how much they owe you. I've no idea what the Glass's figure is for my car so I don't know if I'd be losing out or not.

You wouldn't need £20k of cover though. Remember the cover is for the shortfall......If you pay £20k and 2 years 11 months down the line your insurer gives you £7k, the GAP will pay out £13k....

I would also go for replacement car cover as prices will have gone up in 3 years time.

ALA don't just accept PayPal - they accept cards as this is what my dad did last year...

Anyone know anybody who's ever had to claim under a GAP policy?

Anyone know anybody who's ever had to claim under a GAP policy?

My mate almost did - he'd also put a deposit on a new car and they then decided to repair his :o 4 years down the line, the rust is bubbling nicely on the repaired panels.. :'(

If your lucky enough to be 50 or over Saga Car Insurance give you 2 years free GAP if you are the 1st registered owner of the car

Thanks Auric Goldfinger, for the tip regarding Saga insurance. I got a quote from them and although they are £50 dearer than direct line, I would get 2 years new car replacement, and direct line do not offer this facillity even if you offer to pay for it.

I was with Saga for multi years and you get zero customer loyalty. The premiums went up every year till they were (for me) sky high and we had 2 cars with them. Nearly took them to the trading standards when I got a price match with any other quote leaflet in with both insurances which they refused to honour - they refused to believe my really low matching quote from Esure (Now I an with Skoda)

I've had quotes from Saga for the last two years and they have always exceeded my quote from LV= Frizzell by a large amount. Plus the Saga policy isn't as good.

My renewal came through the door today, last year was £245 its now gone up :o £13 this year :giggle: think I will stay with them for another year
