Rear Axle damage ?

Featured Replies

I have a problem with my rear axle making a droning noise and for the life of me i cant figure it out. In the one day of cold weather we had i managed to find the only piece of black ice in Warwickshire and ended up hitting a curb with my rear passenger side wheel, the wheel is fine but ever since this happened i have a fairly load droning noise that is most noticeable at around 50-60mph, i have had the wheels off to check the bearings and i cant see anything wrong it isnt the brakes rubbing as i sorted that out when i upgraded the brakes. Apart from the wheel bearings being shattered i cant think what it is but there is no movement in the rear wheel so i guess they are ok?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me if it's not a tyre. Doesn't always have to have play in it to make it noisy, in fact these days it's pretty rare for a roller bearing to get play in it anyhow.

defo wheel bearing, I had a similar noise that only became really apparent when doing 50-60mph, and it was my bearing going.

Wheel bearing cage will be buckled slightly.

Ok so looks like i will be needing a new bearing then, would it be best to change both rear bearings at the same time ?

I can't think of any reason to change the other one.

Just check the nut is still to the correct torque. I did the same as you on a previous car and the impact had shocked the nut loose causing the droning noise
