Bogus Dealer?

Featured Replies

Evnin everyone

Just been lookin through my service book as lookin to maybe have it serviced and do the belt etc, and seen that the last 5 stamps are from an independant Lexus and Toyota specialist called Bargoynes. There is no telephone number or address with it and when I google it nothing comes up. I bought the car from a guy who seems genuine enough, selling it for his brother who has emigrated (hmmm). He told me that his brother lived in St Andrews and that was a local garage he used. Anyway the car seems nice enough and generally well looked after but this is making me a little sus.

Is there any other way of checking this garages credentials? or indeed if it exists?

Hi mbames, Yeah that came up in my search but if that is the place then they have made a spelling mistake on their stamp as it says Bargoynes, so either way seems dodgy to me. :wonder: Think I'm going to join a lexus/toyota forum and ask in there if anyone has heard of them. Its not the end of the world and you never know , they may have folded as a lot of businesses have done recently. But I'm sure dealers always put they're number on the stamp. I just hate getting taken for a ride. :(

How clean looking is the stamp? Could it be old making it look like an 'a' rather than a 'u'. Granted unlikely, but you never know.

You could also phone/email the garage and see if they have a records for the car.

As for a numbers and stamps, I have no idea! My car never gets to a "garage" service, it just gets "Matt's Quality Service" instead :-)

Na the stamps are all pretty clear, some a little smudged but still legible all sitting at various angles and some have outlines of a border and some don't but the handwriting at the top is all the same. Interestingly enough had a response from the lexus owners club site and they have never herd of it, even people in St Andrews!! I too service all my cars as I like to know exactly what parts have been used and that any jobs have BEEN done rather than just saying they have been done. So this has spooked me a bit not knowing its history and means I'm going to definitely do the belt and pump now as if the history is bogus then who know if its been done at all.

Classic sign of a bogus stamp to give the car a full service history I'm afraid. Legit garages always put the phone number on their stamps.

You're absolutely right do to the cambelt & pump, it's way too risky to take a chance.

Can you check out the MOT history - might have been MOT'd at the same place it was (or wasn't) serviced. Even if he made up the history, it might just have been lost.

Hi Kandy yes checked on DVLA/Gov. site and all MOT's and mileage check out but none at the same garage. The service history and MOT's go up to 101,000 miles ish roughly about a year ago. I bought the car last month at 115000 miles so definitely due a service anyway. The timing belt is ticked as been done at 77,748 so if true has now done 37-40000 so going to replace I think, Got a quote for belt and pump supplied and fitted for £250 + VAT so £300ish, is this good?

£250 + vat for the belt & pump change is spot on. If the cambelt change can be confirmed at 77748 I wouldn't worry about doing it yet. Yes Skoda recommend every 4 yrs or 40k, but VW recommend every 6 yrs or 60k for the same engine.

Paul, isnt it 4 years and 60k? that was the last I heard.

it used to be x years and 120k lol.

My Octavia needs doing as its on 112k. I was over cautiouse tho and had my pump and belt done at 56k lol.

Its not the kind of thing you leavetho as it will always bee on your mind, is it going to brake? mind they can break even when new.

Given that the service history is suspect, I wouldn't attach any credibility to the tick in a box for a cambelt change unless there is other documentary evidence that it has been done. My recommendation as a recent long-term Octavia 1.8T 4X4 Estate owner is to do what I did at the second cambelt change interval at 8 years, namely to get the cambelt, tensioner and idler pulley changed (the standard replacement kit), plus the water pump and the auxiliary belt. I paid £299 for that lot at an Audi TT Specialist, plus an extra £86.63 to have the belt tensioning damper replaced as well.

Hi Billy I think you'll find Skoda recommend 4 yrs or 40k which ever comes soonest!!! VW have different intervals as do Audi, all very strange as they share the same engines!

Why don't you call H & J Burgoyne Ltd to confirm if they recognise your car. Worth a go

Ah, fair one, its the same kit thats used too lol. random really but as said if suspect then just get it all done, for the sake of 300 notes, its better than having to buy a new engine and still need to swap the belts.

I phoned to confirm the £250 + vat (£300) and was told there is a 1st time user discount of 10% so should be £270 by my math skills. so just going to have to bite the bullet and get it done. service the car myself and just enjoy it. Nearly made a booboo today started to crack the bolts on the throttle body to give it a clean and realised I dont have a new gasket for it! d'oh.

you dont need to take it off, just undo the intake pipe and clean that way - brick on the throttle ensures you can do the back side of it, then use carb cleaner and cotton buds, gentle with the flap mind

tbh mine was amazingly clean at 50k miles and 5yo compared to some i have seen on here and probably wasnt worth doing tbh

Cool cheers for that, will give that a go. Mind you better get this MOT out the way 1st as it may come up with other things needing attention more. :(

plus an extra £86.63 to have the belt tensioning damper replaced as well.

Worth doing on the second belt change at around 120k because if that pops so does everything else

Edited
