switch live feed under bonnet for DRL's?

Featured Replies

Hi, after no luck hi-jacking a similar but old post, I'm fitting DRL's tomorrow and just looking for a switched live under the hood.I've read that there is one under the battery tray for the fan control module? Just wondered if anyone has pics of this and because it no doubt has a billion wires coming from it , do you know what one is the live feed?

Ta.

what about the headlamp levelling motor as they only work with the engine on i think

Hmmm maybe, I'm sure I had to turn the ignition on to get the lights to move but didnt need to start the engine though. I have to check the wirirng to the headlamp levelling motor anyway as the N/S one is not moving so not sure if ts a wiring issue or the motor itself?

Cheers for that though If it does work then that will save a lot of messing around and a couple of feet of wire. :smirk:

I have recently bought some DRL`s but I didn't want mine to switch off at night, I found a set made by Ring that have an ignition live, and a feed from the sidelights. So once the ignition is on the lights are on their brightest, and once the side lights/ head lights are turned on the DRL`s will drop to a medium/low light that is legal for night use. I will be fitting them over the coming week, and it took me a while to settle on these as I believe they will look part of the car i.e OEM. Yes I know the Mk1 didn't have them.

Yes thats what I'm doing with mine, I have just fitted the lights and looks good very OEM and low key (will post pics soon), but now I need to wire them in. I have bought a purpose made relay control unit of e-bay that dims them when either the side lights or dipped beam are on (can change to suit) or can wire so that they turn off with either side or dipped beam lights they also dim on the side that has an indicator flashing as they can be too bright to see the indicator properly. and also have a 'see you home function' which keeps them running for 15 secs aprox. to light your path. :) right out in to the ice I go to wire the things if I can find a switched live. mind you with my skills it will no doubt turn into a fire that'l keep me warm.

Had another thought about using the headlight aim motor. It think it only draws power till it reaches the set level then stops so probably can't use that then otherwise they would only work if I adjust the hedlights :wonder: so back to drawing board. Any other thoughts for an under bonnet switched live fellas?

Just had another thought :S (my head hurt with all this thinking), where is best to route a wire through from the cabin into the engine bay if I have to go to the fuse box or radio for a switched live feed?

I am no electrician but watched a few videos online, most of which advise taking the power directly from the battery and then connect into the side lights!!! that all seems very easy to me, I am sure it wont be though. These where manufactures videos of instillation guides, Halfords came up on the google search as having the most videos to help. :wonder:

Fuse box for the switched live, don't make extra work for yourself lol

I would love to use the fuse box but cant find a route into cabin to get there :(

In the mean time I've cheated and wired them to the front fog lights which I have taken bulbs out, that means I can switch on and off at will. but still want to fit properly so any advice much appreciated.
