Steering Wheel realign

Featured Replies

Hi

As im driving in a straight line the steering wheel is not straight(its not out by much mind you). Is it a case of removing the steering wheel and turning it a couple of knotches. Is the steering wheel hard to remove?

The correct way would be to get the cars tracking adjusted.

It can be done by removing the wheel but you need to ask yourself why the steering wheel if off centre to begin with, this is usually because the tracking has been 'knocked out of line' (pothole or curb etc) because if the tracking is out then simply moving the steering wheel will not cure the tracking.

If however it because the tracking has not been adjusted correctly (i.e. both sides adjusted) then take it back and get them to do the job correctly.

To remove the steering wheel the battery needs to be disconnected, the airbag removed then a spline drive bit is needed to remove the wheel.

I bet its the tracking thats not been adjusted correctly by whoever did it last, the wheel should never need to be removed and doing so is not recommended. Take the car for a proper wheel alignment at a garage who knows what they are doing.

pick the nearest centre to you and get a 4WA done and it will transform the car and the wheel will be pointing the right way.

Tracking is out. I'd check your front tyres for uneven wear.

It's a long time since I've taken a VAG steering wheel off but IIRC the steering wheel only fits on to the column one way so it can't be repositioned.

This is not the way you adjust steering wheel. It was a case on cars with no electics in then back in 70-80s. Not now. If someone ever tell you he needs to take a steering wheel off to adjust it - thank them politly and then run away, they no good to work on your car. To fix that like everyother person here said - you need proper wheel alignment place.

Sorry to hi jack thread, does the traction control have a steering wheel position sensor? As moving the wheel in relation to the steering rack could cause some issues.

The Octavia wheel can be fitted in almost any position as it sits on a spline. If you do remove the wheel you need to mark the position so it goes back in roughly the same place.

Audi and few VW have steering position sensor that can be easly reset after adjustment. I dont know which of Skoda`s comes with it. It not a rocket science to reset it.

As far as removie wheel - adjustment should be done on rods - not on wheel. To check if wheel sits in a middle turn one way to the end and then opposite way. It should end in simetricaly opposite left to right.

Cool wasnt sure on the Skoda as havent looked at removing the steering wheel on mine, but have helped friends with racing motors when they have changed to after market steering wheels but no adaptor for the steering sensor. My other car is a little older so not use to modern electronics lol.
