RPM related ticking noise

Featured Replies

Hello

So I went to see a VRS yesterday, 2005 with 91k on it

The engine sounded alright (granted the oil was black).

There was a ticking sound that would come and go - when it was there it would follow the revs of the engine - but then it would vanish after a few seconds - an then come back.

This started from cold and was still there when upto temp.

It sounded loudest on the TB side of the engine.

I have a suspect in mind but I wanted to see what you all thought??

Thanks

Troy

Was that a MK2 Vrs 2.0 TFSi engine or MK1 vrs 1.8t if it was a mk2 tfsi then it would be normal as they are abit noisey

Sorry I forgot its on the change

It's a 1.8 20v t mk1

The charcoal canister has a valve on top of it that makes a loud ticking all the time if you put your finger on the valve you can feel it pulsing in time with the ticking. The injectors do make a quieter ticking noise as well. The VAG 1.8T engine is not the quietest I have to admit but the sound deadening in the bonnet hides it well.

I'd be asking questions about the oil though these engines ideally need a couple of oil changes a year.

Thanks for that,

I'll think I'll take a spass on this particular car, the oil is black and there is a 20k gap in the service history.

Plus the motor is on 91k and there is no evidence of a cambelt change!! But the manual does say - 120k apparently!!

Was going to take it out on a test drive , but the belt might go! Lol.

Belts are 60k / 4 years as the revised Skoda service interval.

Yeah I know that from the buyers guide on this site,

but the sales guy is quoting the papers in the owners manual, and to be fair I've seen it myself in the book.

So I guess I can understand his confusion - but I'd rather buy from someone that knows.

i'd avoid - £400 approx for belt change and service, 20k gap is no good either, could be expensive if you don't change belt and it goes on you

Yeah I think so too,

the car isnt a bad shape body wise - just a bit of paint to the top of the bumper and the boot plastics tatty.

just think the last owner let the servicing go to poop.

I'll give my local VAG dealer a call an ask for the following -

Cambelt an pump changed

All aux belts done

Fresh oil pick up

Plugs

Oil

Coil pack recall (don't think it's been done)

Anything else you guys might reccomend for a car that hasn't been touched for 20k

Only thinking that if i Do make an offer - id like to go armed to the teeth.
