That's the bloody French for you , absolute no idea emoticon-0149-no.gif

Germany has had this for a while now.

But then they just fine, not take your licence so in their interest to catch more.

Did hear a few years back that if the French traffic police caught you with a camera detector you would get an instant fine and then they would make you drive over it!

Respect :)

I wonder how they check if you have an in-dash sat-nav that also has camera alerts on it... like mine.

TomTom tells you this, and tries to remove the French camera POI file.

I'd imagine other manufactures updates would try to do the same.

I wonder how they make you drive over an in dash unit :giggle:

they would look at your poi or settings i guess to see if speed cams are enabled or are a feature.

its true about the cam detectors in france been banned for a long time.

The problem as the article says is that they cannot interogate the device as that infringes personal rights or something like that, so I have no idea how they will be able to tell unless the device has a big sticker which says 'I tell the driver where all your cameras are!' If it is illegal to inform the driver where the cameras are, does that apply to a passenger who knows the road or is looking out for them?

With radar and laser detectors it was a bit more simple as that is what they were designed soley for.

All I can see happening is that France will push forward legislation within the whole EU to make it illegal to tell anyone where the cameras are. It does seem to be a new bit of knee jerk legislation from the 'speed causes all the world's problems' brigade.

My bet would be that they'll setup a few speed-recording video cameras overlooking a known camera site.

They'll then use this to catch drivers who hoon upto the camera, brake and then accelerate away again. Catch the driver, then inspect their sat nav.

A few drivers will get a major hammering to try to set an example.

Might well be a few spot-checks as well, again to set an example. They cann't check every single car. Even the bl**dy minded frogs wouldn't go that far, or would they ...

This is closing the stable door after the horse has bolted

It’s like they are trying to trip you up. I bit like putting you foot out as someone moves past. I just can’t see the point of it. Mind you I don’t have a Road Angel or whatever as mine was nicked!

I wonder how they make you drive over an in dash unit :giggle:

Make sure you take your radio removal tools next time you are over there so you can remove it prior to driving over it.

Otherwise they have to bring on Le Grande Chieftan Tank for you to drive over La Automobile.

I found ignoring the cameras seemed not to have any adverse effects other than extra illumination

As if they can enforce that. Completely idiotic emoticon-0149-no.gif

They don't need to enforce it, it will enforce itself.

All it takes is for Pocketgpsworld, Tomtom and others to remove the French cameras in an update and its taken care of. The latest Tomtom western europe iphone app already has the cameras removed so others will follow. All it takes is the french to issue a court injunction in other countries and jobs a goodun.

At the risk of stating the obvious - all you need to do is drive / ride within the speed limit and there isn't a problem.

Good job that I have absolutely no intention whatsoever of driving my own car in France, or for that matter visiting the place :D

I suspect that this will be treated in exactly the same way that all similar types of health, safety, motoring etc. laws and regulations are enforced in France.

Namely, the locals will ignore it, the Police will ignore the locals ignoring it, and concentrate on clobbering foreign tourists and visitors.

... concentrate on clobbering foreign tourists and visitors.

its revenge for Cameron not signing upto the "Lets pay off the euro debt as well as our own" deal that Sarkozy wanted to shove down our necks

^What he said but.......

This is favourite hobbyhorse about the two faced, lying nature of the Safety Camera Partnership and the police. When it's put to them that it's just a money making exercise, they say "oh no, we wouldn't do that :notme: it's a safety thing. The cameras are there to make the road safer." Only under protest did they make them yellow in this country.

So - IF the cameras are there for safety, why not have a gps system for non-locals that alerts them to the location of a camera? Since it's clearly a dangerous stretch of road, or the camera wouldn't be there right? Why not allow them to know that in advance?

I've said before - personally I'd make cameras as invisible and inconspicuous as possible and then ban detectors. That would make people follow the speed limits at all times. Then the Camera Partnerships and the police can call it what it really is, a tax on the stupid/irresponsible. I just wish they'd grow a pair and stop lying to us.

Like that's going to happen.

'anti-speeding' has become an industry in itself, makers of speed-detectors, council officers, road designers, pseudo-scientistis, etc ,etc all have a huge vested interest in pushing the B/S.

The French consulate website says nothing about satnav speed camera databases being illegal. However it does state that radar detectors are illegal. Anyone know better?

I think the workaround which TomTom and the like are going for is to use general safety points rather than actual camera positions. The immediate response has been to withdraw the current positions.

Original article is from the Motorcycle News site, reputable. Also found This on the Garmin site. Consulate website probably just slow to update or they a percentage of the fines any UK drivers get hit with.
