Hill Hold Fault

Featured Replies

Hi all, a few months ago I noticed that the hill hold function on my car stopped working, time went by and I kept forgetting to book it in. Anyway, before Christmas I had the brake pads changed as they have done 98K, thinking that this might solve the hill hold issue, but to no avail. I booked the car into the dealer for today, they have just contacted my and said the sensor behind the ABS unit is faulty and they will replace it. Can anyone enlighten me as to which sensor they mean, is it just the hill hold one ?

Update, just spoken to the dealers, they have replaced the sensor but this has not cured the fault. They have contacted Skoda Technical and are awaiting further instructions. In the mean time I'm picking the car up today and they'll contact me as soon as they have further details.

Update, the dealer called yesterday and said Skoda Technical have replied suggesting its a wiring fault. The dealer advised that the extended warranty does not cover wiring faults. They quoted £280 +vat as they have to remove the drivers seat to fault find the wiring.

A work colleague has kindly scanned my car this morning, details are :

The car has been booked in for a 'wiring check' on 30th Jan.

Doesn't hill hold use the ESP somehow? Is it worth getting this checked?

You could always just use the handbrake with clutch control? ;)

HHC is one part of ESP unit. HHC use all from brake system mainly one part of duosenzor under driver seat if ESP functions OK will KO that senzor i give 90% on senzor-unit

Apparently they replaced the sensor under the passenger front seat on their first attempt but to no avail :(

I love it - typical VAG - lets complicate a really simple feature!

My old Punto HGT had hill hold - it used a switch on the brake pedal (which was easy to get to) and a tilt sensor and ......er.......thats it!

Take foot off brake, you now have two seconds to let up the clutch before brake pressure is released. Worked a treat "Simples"!

Car is also booked in for a service at the same time, so hopefully the quoted price might be cheaper

Does anyone know how to DIY hill hold???

Does anyone know if hill hold can be disabled? I found my Octavia L&K has it after I stalled it every time I tried to pull away on a hill. It takes way too much revs and pushing against the clutch to disengage it. I can do hill starts, don't need it...

Cheers,

Update from the dealer, they apparently found a fault with the wiring that has now been resolved and has cleared the fault code but, the HHC still does not work. They now believe that the ABS unit is at fault but they have to wait for the warranty company engineer to arrive tomorrow to approve the fix because of the cost involved and the fact that there are no fault codes present. The cost of the unit is £1500 !

I've got HH and if that ever happened to me, at those prices anyway, i'd just leave it be. I don't use the bloody function anyway!

Very true blackspaven. I had a thought, are the ABS and ESP systems still working correctly ?, so I just called the dealer and they confirmed that both systems are working correctly. They came to this conclusion as there are no fault codes or warning lights present. So, just to recap, the HHC is faulty, but has no fault codes or warning lights and the dealer reckons the ABS/ESP systems are fine because there are no fault codes or warning lights ! hmmmmmm

Update, just spoke to the Dealer, the Warranty Engineer has tested the car and gone through their testing etc and has agreed to change the ABS/ESP unit. The garage will contact me tomorrow once the jobs completed. So we'll go from there, but its good news :)

Update, the Dealer has called, the HHC is now working. Apparently changing the ABS/ESP unit did not fix the issue, they had to wipe the memory on the brake system and reprogram the sensors. I'm picking the car up tonight so I'll let you know tomorrow if everything is ok.

Update (possibly the last), I collected the car yesterday. With regards to the wiring fault, the Dealer explained that the connector block on the ABS/ESP unit had a single corroded wire to connector pin that had to be fixed, this resolved the fault code but did not resolve the HHC. The ABS/ESP unit has been replaced (as mentioned before), but this did not resolve the HHC issue. Apparently they had to recode the brake system/sensors. I am glad to report that the HHC is now working correctly, so I must pass on my thanks to Sherlodge Garage for resolving this.

Soo HHC is only a matter of reprograming the ECU.

I can try to activate HHC except it gives me a ESP fault, the ECU is not recognized :wonder:

You also need the HHC unit, which is part of the ESP

I spoke too soon, the fault has returned :wall:

I'll have to call the dealer again. Unfortunately the extended warranty expired shortly after they 'fixed' it the first time, so not sure where I stand with this

My car is booked into the dealer next week for an MOT and they'll take a look at the HHC fault :(

Surely new parts fitted will at least be under a 12 month guarantee and in any case, it'd be very bad form to ask you to pay for curing a fault which reared its head whilst the car was still under warranty?
