airbags are not mandatory.

That's the thing, I thought a drivers airbag was, and has been for several years? All the others are optional, but I thought the drivers bag was mandatory and since that's the one I've removed (and you can see it's missing, unlike a passenger/seat airbag) that's why I'm thinking it would come under "obviously missing or defective" and be a reason for rejection.

"The MOT test includes an examination of the steering wheel for strength and/or a condition that would hamper proper control or is likely to injure the driver’s hands. "

"The air bag system is not included in the MOT test."

Since "as far as practicable" for a drivers airbag is as simple as "look at it", I can't imagine many places will skip it as "not practicable".
