Anyone with DeCat had MOT in 2012 yet

Featured Replies

After all the speculation last year I had my MOT a month early to avoid being the first guinee pig of 2012.

Has anyone with a DeCat had an MOT this year yet and if so what was the outcome?

Interested because if I need a new exhaust will probably need new MAP also, so need to prepare.

cheers

Had my MOT on 5th jan. I have a decat and passed no problem. Decats on petrol's however could be a problem i'm told.

I have a air bag light on as i have removed the air bags and was told i'd need to cover the warning light with a sticker for next time. Nice one halfords!

All that has been added is a visual test for emission tested cars, diesels are not tested for this, so no changes will affect them.

mine passed other week no probs

Hmm, overpriced tat, useless workers and now bent MOT's, it gets better.

The likes of HID's, cats etc will be an advisory until the 31st of March, after this its then a fail.

Mine falls in March so heres hoping I'll get another years MOT without much hassle as the HID's passed no problem last year.

Denzels wont fail with a decat Mert, it's been covered a million times.

There is a visual check for a cat on cars that require an emissions test... denzels only have a smoke test.

Decat = MOT Pass.

Who's Denzel?

Brilliant advice, although take it anywhere which isn't crap and that'll still fail I believe. The airbag light should be visible briefly on startup while it "self-checks" and I think both are failure (light visible when it shouldn't be, as well as light not visible when it should be).

:D del boy voice "Denzel my son!" pmsl

The surprising thing here is that Halfords didn't offer to sell you the sticker for £87.50 :)

Denzel diesel, diesel denzel. Lol. It's what they get called around my area sometimes :)

thought you were talking about me - was nicknamed Denzil in a place I used to work - wondered how the hell you knew

There are many threads discussing HIDs and MOTs. From what I can understand headlight washers and levelling are I think not required, but if they are fitted, they must work correctly. So if the headlights pass the beam test, then it will pass. Some other people say you have to have washers etc fitted. I would imagine it will be up to the MOT tester to how these rules are interoperated.

A bit like Cats too. I've read you have to have a cat if fitted by manufacturer. And some say only petrols have to have a cat fitted.

This - bit worried I am going to be affected as mine is blanked all the time (racing steering wheel fitted....)

I still reckon your best option is try to somehow bridge the EML and airbag LEDs. Then you could fit a standard wheel with airbag (but not connected) and do away with the need to refit your whole airbag controller and a passenger airbag unit just for a once a year MOT. It might look a bit suspect with them lighting up and going out together, but is an MOT tester going to notice/care?

Its bridging I am planning to do. At least I know if EML and airbag come on at the same time, I know which one is actually the right one. ;) You would also somehow have to turn off whatever connection is telling the airbag light to come on in the first place, i.e lack of airbag that the car is seeing. So need to kill LED connection to the cluster itself, then bridge to EML. Should be fun (and something I'll let an auto electrician do methinks.... :D)

Airbag light not part of the test if no airbag is fitted.

Mine has the light blanked, no airbag fitted as I've got a Momo wheel, no problem.

I was thinking just break the connections between the PCB and the LED for the airbag, and then bridge the connections to the LED for the EML. If the LED is unsoldered from the pads then it just won't light up and no one will be any the wiser...it doesn't matter what's causing the light to come on, if it's disconnected then it can't come up :)

Does that not come under an "obviously missing or defective" airbag though? All cars since the 90s should have drivers side airbags, so yours (and mine, I also have a Momo with the resistor-based fitting kit to keep the warning light off) would surely be covered by that part of the test?

Yours has a passenger airbag though so may cause concern with that.

As far as I know from our tester at work if it's not fitted it can't be tested, airbags are not mandatory.

If airbags have suposedly got a life span of around 10 years how come the older cars fitted with airbags dont get pulled up/affected my mot rules?
