Anyone running 255 35 tyres on 18" rims?

As the above question suggests, I am struggling with getting the power down (as many of us do!) but am wondering who has tried this tyre set up and what were the pros and cons. It seems to have the nearest rolling diameter to the standard 225 40 R18s whilst being a phat tyre.

I'm running K04 power through the front wheels so I appreciate that nothing is going to 'solve' the problem; just looking to make an improvement.

On the standard 7.5" rim? That will be too wide for the rim.

There's a black vRS wagon in Australia (todd) who runs 235/40 18 without any issues. He's running Rays which I think are 8 x 18.

Those will cause havoc in the arches when you apply some lock as well! emoticon-0104-surprised.gif

I don't think you need wider tyres, that is likely to only end in a reduction in steering feedback and handling on the Octy chassis. I'd look more at what tyres you're running at the moment. Bearing in mind this time of year is never the best to attempt to get traction, let alone with KO4 power feeding the front wheels :)

235 width may be possible, but it does depend on the rim width, rim offset and suspension setup.

I think 235 is the widest recommended on a 7.5J wheel, maybe 8.5J would be ok?

245 wide tyres rub like nobodys business on the rear wheel arches and they were on an 8" wide rim on a standard ride height PD140 estate.

255 is possible. You'll need an 8.5" rim, with an ET of 50 ideally (minimum 48) then potentially some arch rolling and liner modification. I think the clearance will be tight, but it is doable.

You will be surprised how much difference the extra 30mm on each tyre will make to the traction. I'm saving to try this setup in the summer with Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.3 with Toyo R888 255/35/18 rubber :)

Toyo Proxes 4. Traction is surprisingly good to say they're 19".

Yep, it was Harry that got me thinking about this a while ago and as Harry says, I already have a Quaife ATB diff (really should update my sig!). He would also say that the Goodyear Assymetric 2's that I am currently running are good around the corners but not so great for forward traction...and I would have to agree compared to others I have tried - they have little in the way of coss-sectional tread which may not help.

There's no doubt that a 7.5" rim ain't going to work; I was wondering what would. Harry - I think I will let you pioneer this one before I throw any more money at this ;)

I'm running 235's at the moment, and there looks to be a fair bit of room in the arches left over. I'm wondering if any of the arch modding would actually be needed on the octavia. The information I posted above is based on a MK5 GTI. JonnyC said that his S3 had more clearance. I'm thinking Octavia = bigger car = more room?

You latest post mentions, your running 235 on the Octy. Are they 40's or 35's?

The nearest I've seen for rolling radius is 255x35's.

What are your opinions about that size for an Octy on 18's?

Wayne, just to clarify that my post which you quote wasn't meant in an aggressive way and merely a light hearted sarcastic remark :)

Current tyre config is 235/35/19. I have run 235/40/18 in the past, but that threw the speedo reading out slightly. That was also before any major power upgrades when traction wasn't an issue.

I am willing to give the 255/35/18 a go if and when I can afford it, but I'll need new wheels to accommodate such a wide tyre. Would also love some recaro pole positions too, but need to win the lottery first :p

In a nutshell, no.

The OEM zeniths are 7.5J, you'll need a minimum of 8.5J for them to fit.
