Oil filter removal

Featured Replies

On the tdi, there's a paper filter inside a fixed case. Is there a specific tool for removing the plastic cap from the top? Raf and I were loath to use a chain to remove it.

It says on it to tighten to 25Nm so clearly not meant to be just hand tight.

25nm is only just over hand tight. But yes there is a specific tool for the cap, can get them on eBay or really cheap from a dealer anyhow.

Thanks. What's "really cheap"?

Less than £5 when I bought mine, was a while ago mind.

36mm socket on my MK2 vRS dont know if its the same tho.

Sure? Most are 32mm but they do change.

The MK1 has a flat black cap on the top.

When I needed to first remove mine it has been done by a set of untrained monkeys on a body building course.

I did the following:

layer of sand paper (grit side against the plastic of the oil filter)

strip of aluminium outside of the sandpaper

chain wrench around the aluminium

It soon came undone with no damage.

Bonus: no waiting for a cheapo tool to arrive from ebay.

I bought the the tool, can't remember where from but it was about £5.

a found one at my local tool store, about 2p.But I don't know the diameter of the oil filter.

Is it a 70 mm diameter?

Link I found on eBay said 76mm with 14 flat sides. Don't know if that's right but it's not far off....

yeah mate I bought it especially and just double checked 36mm oil filter socket made by laser if that helps anyone. My MK2 also has a black screw on cap I think its for some sort of posh screw on pipe to drain the filter before you take it off otherwise it gets messy.

So one like this then?

I have a similar one to that, but mine is cast alloy. Bought it years ago for my MK2 GTI, fits the Skoda filters and the one on the Porsche

yeah you can just see it if you open the bonnet just opposite the bottom of the radiator.

Yeah that's it, changed a few ;) lol

anyone tried to unscrew it only by hand?

Yeh I did wouldn't budge, the rubber seal helps keep it really tight. When using the strap it wasn't till it turned a couple of times that you could undo the rest by hand. I would of used the chain but thought it may crush it lol
