Headlights again

I've searched the forums and read lots of threads about this subject. None of them answer my problem. I need to operate the change lever to select flat beam on my Roomster 1.6 tdi CR 2010 model with reflector main beams and projector dips outside the mains.

If this lever actually exists it is impossible to see it or operate it without dismantling something. The battery is in the way N/S and I think the fuel filter? O/S.

I have tried to see it using a mirror but cannot identify it leave alone operate it. I can't envisage doing it in the ferry queue so any help will be most appreciated.

Has anyone actually done this on the same model?

It would be nice to fit upgraded bulbs (H7) as well but this also seems impossible. I have changed the mains, also H7, but the dips have got me beat.

I took my 2011 Roomster SE to France in September. I was at an agricultural show in August and saw my local dealer (Simpsons of Preston) had a stand, so I went over to ask where my lever was ('cos I'll be bu&&ered if I can find it) and the salesman told me my 2011 car didn't have them, so I used beam deflectors instead.

I think they are something which are meant to exist but are rarely found, like unicorns

From the owners manual....

Tourist light

Halogen projector headlights with cornering light function

This mode makes it possible to drive in countries with opposing traffic system,

driving on the left/right, without dazzling the oncoming vehicles. When the mode

“tourist light” is active, the side to side swivel of the headlights is deactivated.

Activating tourist light

Before activating the tourist light, the following conditions must be met:

Ignition switched off, light switched off (light switch in the position O), control dial

for the headlamp beam adjustment in the position -, no gear engaged or selector

lever in the position N (automatic gearbox), tourist light deactivated.

– Switch on the ignition.

Up to 10 seconds after the ignition is switched on:

– Turn the light switch to the position  ⇒ page 39.

– Engage the reverse gear (manual gearbox) or move the selector lever into the

position R (automatic gearbox).

– Turn the control dial for headlamp beam adjustment from the position - to the

position 3 ⇒ page 42.

Deactivating tourist light

Before deactivating the tourist light, the following conditions must be met:

Ignition switched off, light switched off (light switch in the position O), control dial

for the headlamp beam adjustment in the position 3, no gear engaged or selector

lever in the position N (automatic gearbox), tourist light activated.

– Switch on the ignition.

Up to 10 seconds after the ignition is switched on:

– Turn the light switch to the position  ⇒ page 39.

– Engage the reverse gear (manual gearbox) or move the selector lever into the

position R (automatic gearbox).

– Turn the control dial for headlamp beam adjustment from the position 3 to the

position - ⇒ page 42.

The adaptation of the halogen projector headlights must be performed as follows

⇒ page 137.

Note

When the “tourist light” mode is active, the warning light  flashes for about 10

seconds each time the ignition is switched on.

This to deactivate the "cornering fuction"....as for the lever....this usually is for Xenon headlamps from the factory....Roomster and Fabia MKII do not have this....so get the stickers for the lens!

Fabdavrav, Thanks for taking the trouble to reply, I have similar in my handbook. The 2nd last sentence gives the clue. My handbook is the Anglicky 03.10. In fact it refers to a different page but I guess the content is similar. It tells that Halogen projectors must be adapted by moving a bezel. So clearly not just for xenon type.

Do all projector lights have the cornering facility? Mine appear fixed, but could have been de-activated.(used car)

You need to remove a rubber dust cover from the rear of the headlight. Mine were about 3" round rubber push on covers.

The lever is to the side of the hole exposed when then rubber cover is removed.

He we go then....missed it from first post....page 137...... :giggle:

Headlights

The low beam of your headlights is set asymmetrically. It illuminates the side of

the road on which you are driving to a greater extent. If you drive abroad on the

other side of the road, you will dazzle oncoming traffic.

Halogen projector headlights

The adaptation of the headlights (valid for vehicles which are designed for driving

on the left and on the right) must be performed by switching over a bezel by a

specialist garage.

Headlight beam setting ⇒ page 40.

Halogen headlight

When using Halogen headlights, it is necessary to stick a sticker over a certain

part of the headlights in order to prevent the dazzling of oncoming traffic.

You can purchase headlight stickers from the range of the ŠKODA Original Accessories.

Note

You can obtain further information regarding masking over or converting the

headlights from your specialist garage. 

Fabrav, I appreciate what you're trying to say. But I am trying to find out if anyone has actually located the bezel on a 2010 1.6 tdi Roomster. If they have I would like to pick their brains on how they accessed it. Repeating what the handbook/owners manual says is not helping. If a bezel can be switched by specialists I imagine it's not impossible for ordinary mortals.

Aubrey, Mine has 2 rubber covers on each headlight. The one for the dip is completely inaccessible to any hand except a very small childs. Did you access the dips via the main lights cover?

It seems there are quite a few types of headlights fitted. I have a 2007 Roomster 3 without the cornering lights. You may have a different style of headlight as my large rubber cover was not difficult at all to reach.

There is another smaller rubber cover just over an inch diameter which as you say is hard to reach but that is for my side light not dipped beam.

My main and dip are the same H7 bulb. Are you talking about the sidelight that is hard to get at, if yes I agree it does look tricky.

I was taking about the big rubber cover and I have looked again and the rubber cover is about 4" across, bigger than I remembered. I looked again at the headlight on the front offside, directly infront of the battery. You just remove that large 4" diameter rubber cover (careful not to drop it) and the lever is towards the centre of the vehicle. It is a vertical lever.

Thanks for that Aubrey, it seems then that our headlights differ. Mine have 2 large (4") rubber covers and one smaller for the sidelight on each headlight. The dips are the outers (projectors single H7) The inners are main beams (Reflectors single H7)

I have noticed lots of Roomsters on the road with different arrangements. Guess I'll have to ask at the dealers, but not holding out much hope there. Thanks BB

Even if you have the lights with the levers they don't work too well. You have a large shadow on the left hand side when you dip the lights. I posted about it a couple of years ago, and my dealer had no joy when he tried to find out if mine had a fault.

Not really sure what you're on about here. I gave enough info in post 1 to identify my model. Maybe there are differences within my model/year depending on spec which is why I described the lights I have and their positions. But thanks anyway if you're trying to help.

The shadow is so you dont blind traffic on the other side of the road abroad! I used mine on a trip down to the southeast of Spain in my old Fabia in 2009 with no problems.

I wasn't expecting such a huge shadow. I was just expecting the left light to have a flat top like the right one has.
