ebay oct vrs- thoughts ?

Featured Replies

Sorry should have said Mods can devalue a car not extras.

Was refering to th ebay car.

Yeah agreed, iv got a set of alloys and coilovers to go on mine but im keeping the OEM stuff as it will be easier to sell a standard car then one modded to my taste

Im not keen on the mud flaps on the Ebay example, i know they can be easily taken off but i think they look tacky and im sure about the alloys either

Why all the negatives about the mods? If it's been done properly there's nothing to worry about - Let's not forget the Leon Cupra R is 265bhp standard with very little difference to the engine IIRC, surely the engine, clutch and transmission can take it?

Nothing wrong with mods, look at my sig, but as for buying a modded car how do you know they have been 'done properly'? Personally I wouldn't.

As for the cupra, define 'very little difference'? It's those differences, like a different turbo amongst other various things, that enable it to produce so much more as standard and that enable a stage 1 to take it to 300bhp+.

Not really being negative about the mods I have modded loads of cars in the last 25 years but the mods can devalue a car.

In my book they certainly dont add value unless the original parts are supplied as well.

i dont think any extra's can devalue a car but heated wing mirrors...wooo i always wanted that!

Ema, what spec is your Octavia?

I think you may well already have the heated wing mirrors  They only activate when you use the heated rear screen.

By the way Cruise Control is fantastic for those average speed camera runs for miles and miles on the motorway. And you wont find better service than Shark ;)

have certainly noticed that prices seem to vary widly with the vrs just now. Have noticed the diesel versionz off the same year, spec are a lot more expensive, possibly more demand ??

end off the day is no doubt down to high road tax / insurance and petrol prices making bigger cars just not so easy to move on these days hence it effecting the price .

Yes you are correct. These are all factors that determine the demand and therefore actual market value of the car. Also IMO the more "extras" you have on the car the easier it will be to sell it and you "should" get a slight premium on the price. Especially if they are factory fit. Things like Xenons, maxidot, parking sensors, cruise control etc.

However keep in mind that it costs you more to buy a diesel which to a point can be off-set by depreciation. The biggest misconception is that because you achieve higher mpg than a petrol its cheaper to run. This only really works out if you do a lot of miles which then depreciates your car more. Also if you are only doing short trips it takes longer for a diesel to warm up and depending on which year it was you can start to get a load of problems connected to the dpf. Not to mention short trips reduce your mpg.

In summary if you ignore the extra in initial purchase price (because the depreciation % cancels it out). Take into account the higher tax and the difference in fuel price v mpg. Unless you are doing above average mileage you will more than likely be better off with a petrol. Sit down for 10 mins and do some quick sums yourself and you might be surprised at how many miles you need to be doing before you start to take advantage of a diesel over a petrol engine.

P.S. Petrol always drives better than a diesel, everyone know that, lol :p

I got my car from ebay 3 years ago, at the time they were fetching as much as 11k for the spec, year and mileage mine had. I paid £7400, admittedly it was a gamble but it was from a garage, and they only required a £200 deposit, they also agreed to refund that if the car wasn't totally as described.

Regarding the one in the ebay ad, for all the extras I would say it is hugely under priced, but the biggest concern for me would be the lack of information. Ask any of the guys on here the level of detail that would go in to an ad if they were selling a highly modified car like it. That said, the seller may have bought the car like that so doesn't no.

As I see it you have nothing to lose by viewing it and bombarding the guy with questions particularly regarding the modifications.

Things I would be asking for example - is it a complete replacement HPFP or just uprated internals Auotech etc, which varitant of KW's are they, and bear in mind it states it is lowered 30mm, the minimum for a KW is -35mm? What exhaust is fitted, downpipe only or full turbo back, blah, blah....

Imho, I think 280 bhp is as little optimistic, especially with the carp carbonio air fitted but I could be wrong. As previously mentioned buying a modified car is not a problem providing it has all been done correctly and maintained, but if it is genuinely turning out that power I would recommend an uprated clutch......

If you want any further information, drop me a PM.

HTH, Lee.

By the way( octimark) the heated mirrors are not activated by the rear screen ,the dial you use to alter the position of them( rotary ) there is a heating symbol on it, in that position they are heated
