Yeti dilemma

Featured Replies

Im a bit worried now of the suggestions of being underpowered. im pretty much ready to order (ie today) but losing my nerve a little.

Reports of being poor on the motorway and underpowered when ladened are not what i wanted to hear but rather hear them now than experience it myself after shelling out thousands.

Im torn now... The 30 min test drive doesnt reveal those kinds of short comings.

Ask for an extended test drive, I took all the final 3 competitor's out for 2 hour test drives, on all sorts of roads, had a good play with all the toys and features inside and picked up a few friends on the vehicles I were worried were weaker powered. Took Petrol and diesels of the same model on exactly the same route to see if torques made a different!

Spending that kind of money, esp if waiting for an order, u need to know its the right choice.

Freezin as has been stated before the 1,2 being underpowered is ONLY an issue when it is fully loaded and you try to maintain 80mph on a motorway. It won't be any slower than a 1980s 1,6 Ford Sierra or a Peugeot 405. In the least. It is just that with time people have got used to more and more power in their cars and want to zoom past other people all the time or have bags of reserve power. The 1,2 won't do that fully laden. So what? You will still get where you're going in total comfort at a fair rate of knots. Fret not. In town and in (I suspect 95%) of all the normal uses you will put it, the 1,2 will be 100% suitable for you. Only you know your real uses and the percentages of these. If you regularly plan four up trips with a roof box on or a trailer, get the 110 diesel. If it is a once a year thing then get the 1,2 and you will get there 15 minutes later. In the grand scheme of things that is really not a big deal.

The real problem is that the Yeti has no real "duffers" (ie obvious bad choices) in terms of engine choice (making said choice a challenge), and its anti-motorway aerodynamics. The only gap in the engine range is probably a 140TDi FWD (or 6sp 110TDi / 105TDi) for better m-way cruising (when needed).

The TDI 140 2WD does now exist as a GreenTech model (not GreenLine), unfortunately again UK customers miss out.

Freezin, as Johann and the Plumber has said the 1.2 will do everything you said you wanted. You were initially comparing the Yeti with a 1.2 Polo and the Polo would suffer exactly the same problems if you fully loaded it everyday, but you said there was generally just you and your wife in the car and it would be used for shopping type trips and the occasional longer run. The 1.2 in either the Yeti or the Polo would be perfect for that type of use so its down to personal preference rather than concerns about power and torque!

Most of the 1.2 Polo's are normally aspirated units and not to be confused with the turbocharged 1.2 TSi which I believe Polo-wise, can only be had in the top SEL trim ? Performance and torque from the latter are in a different league.

The GreenLine 1.6 goes well and has shedloads more torque than the 1.2. Might be worth having a go in one?

Hi Guys, just wanted to pop back on and give an update.

Firstly thanks to everyone whos contributed and enforced/allayed my concerns.

Im meticulous to the point of painful in many things, especially when it comes to parting with £000's (my poor wife) so your help/advice/encouragement has been sincerely appreciated.

Anyway back to the update:

Today i ordered a......

Yeti 1.2 Elegance

Muscovado- Black Onyx

Spare Wheel

Silver rails

Textile Mats

Heated windscreen

etc

From Prestons Skoda in that there London.... A proper Trek for me but the service, patience, support and advice (Not forgetting Price) from Lee has been top notch. So despite it being a 7+ hour round trip for me to pick it up im more than glad to Lee / Prestons my custom.

Im going to drop a section on the dealer page or make a new thread to give it a bit more visibility* but to press Pretons / Lee come with my seal of approval. If you are thinking of buying give them the opportunity to get you the deal you want.

Thanks again everyone.

*Ill do it tomorrow... im off to the Bradford Beer festival now so ill do it over the weekend :drunk:

Mudflaps (front/rear)

Well done! Good to see you went for the Elegance in the end. Now the wait starts. How long did they state that might be?

12 weeks-ish.

Apparently the fact its a petrol manual means there should be no delay.

It's been my pleasure, it took some toing and froing but I'm happy and I am sure you will be.

Enjoy the festival and the beer!

  • 1 year later...

emoticon-0136-giggle.gif You should read the tests of the 1,0 litre 3 cylinder 123 hp Ford Focus then. Makes this 1,2 engine look ancient and agricultural in its output and emissions.

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Drives/Search-Results/First-drives/Ford-Focus-10-Ecoboost-review/

But that is how technology moves on. This 1,2 engine will seem large in capacity in a few years! emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Just for anyone considering looking at a Focus with the 1.0 100ps Ecoboost engine as a potential alternative to a 1.2 Yeti or Octavia. A colleague at work has one in her Focus estate. The "official" average fuel consumption is 57.7mpg. She's had the car as the second owner, for around a year (61 plate) and she has averaged.......33mpg!!

I guess that having a pretty large car with a small capacity engine isn't always a great idea.

Hi Freezin. I traded in my 2.0 V50 diesel Volvo about 4 months ago for the 1.2 TSI Elegance. Never regretted it for a minute. I don't know how the two cars stats. would stack up - I suspect the Volvo would be "better" - and I do know thatthe Volvo returned maybe 3mpg better than the Yeti does at the moment but the Yeti is great to drive and makes the Volvo now seem very pedestrian. I've driven a fair few miles now with four adults and two dogs in the car and never found the engine wanting. In fact I've been surprised at how well it goes up hills even in the higher gears.

Unless rapid acceleration and maintaining (illegally) high speeds is important to you, you could do a lot worse than the 1.2 in Elegance trim and some options - I rate the sunroof and having a spare wheel. Yet to test the heated windscreen, not being in Falmouth this morning.

Oh dear, just realised how old the original post was. Another of those senior moments!! This does seem to be happening a lot these days.

Sorry Paul52, 'forgot to put a note on my post stating that it wasn't directly related to the original (old) question.
