Yeti dilemma

Test Drove the 1.2 Elegance this evening... WOW!!! i couldnt believe its only a 1.2.

Very Impressed to say the least.

:giggle: You should read the tests of the 1,0 litre 3 cylinder 123 hp Ford Focus then. Makes this 1,2 engine look ancient and agricultural in its output and emissions.

But that is how technology moves on. This 1,2 engine will seem large in capacity in a few years! :giggle:

  • Freezin as has been stated before the 1,2 being underpowered is ONLY an issue when it is fully loaded and you try to maintain 80mph on a motorway. It won't be any slower than a 1980s 1,6 Ford Sierra

  • Hi Guys, just wanted to pop back on and give an update. Firstly thanks to everyone whos contributed and enforced/allayed my concerns. Im meticulous to the point of painful in many things, especially

The 1.0 has tons of technology and fantastic emission and economy, but I can't help but think the 3 cylinder would be quite rough and unrefined.

Just read the bit in that article in how they cleverly balanced it...

My son has one of the early 1.2HTP 54bhp 3 cylinder Fabia's. Lovely little motor and I always enjoy driving it when I get an opportunity, which is rare these days now he's at last working; albeit on a 15month administrative apprenticeship.

Also like it for it's reasonable simplicity and lack of excessive emission controls, which are otherwise proving to be the bane of my life :D

My last car was a 3 cylinder Audi A2 TDI. Loved that engine. The roar it made is fantastic and it loved to rev all the way to the red line day in and day out and still gave me 45mpg average all the time. It was a tractor when cold but once warm it was not as unbalanced as you might think. With the Golf V5 we have now you always feel the unbalanced five cylinder up front at traffic lights. I don't mind it as I just love the sound of a five as well. Hence the sound the Yeti's engine (does not) make being the one and only thing I really hate about the car. But then that is what you get with a "balanced" four cylinder. Balance but no soul.

But back OT: Freezin: is your mind made up now? You will get the 1,2 and not the 1,4? :giggle:

I think its the allround best choice balancing economy, reasonable performance and price. i love the quietness of the petrols.

Just need to find 'the deal' now.

Good! I'd suggest a pre-ordered, ready for delivery brand new one from somewhere to avoid the months and months of waiting. Waiting for a new car is NOT fun.

To avoid going off topic I notice that the 1.0 Ecoboost Focus is listed for more than 16k and Drive the Dtd starts at 11777.

My main concern about 3 cylinders are that they are not balance, anyway have driven a few Fabia courtesy car and I like the low down grunt of the 1.2 HTP.

My Triumph Street Triple has no balance issues at all-revs to 12k too. 3 cylinder engines can be creamy and make a great noise.

Waiting times are about 4 months at the moment on the 1.2 provided the dealer you choose has spare allocation.

Had mine for around 9 months now and the 1.2 never ceases to amaze me, you have to remind yourself that that is all you have under the bonnet!:)

Both my Triumphs triples made a great sound - one of the very the first blueprinted Trident 900's and later a Sprint 900. Sadly sold both & not replaced.

Bloody hell!!!! Ford is not only going to produce 123hp from this 1,0 litre tripple but also ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY SEVEN hp! Yes that is right 177hp from a one litre engine!

So perhaps VAG will replace the 1,8 TSI with a 1,2 after all! :giggle:

Mmmm interesting, I have nothing against small engines, but I would much prefer a 1.6 4 cylinder with the same power.

Slightly OT but why do Skoda not do a 110 4x4 Yeti with the DSG?

This would be the ideal combination for me, and I suspect, several others who do not want or need 140 or 170 horses.

The 1.2 has an output of 105bhp and can have DSG so I see no reason why the diesel 110 cannot have it too?

Slightly OT but why do Skoda not do a 110 4x4 Yeti with the DSG?...

Because they don't want it to outshine the VW range, I suspect. The Golf has the 1.6TDi with 7sp DSG (dropping only 1.6mpg avg per govt figures over the manual)... so would probably work well in a Yeti.

Not sure if VAG fit the DSG to any of the detuned 110 2.0TDis though...

A 3 cylinder 4 stroke engine should be better balanced than a 4 cylinder engine, basically it is half a 6 cylinder which technically provides the most balanced 4-stroke engine you can design. Just run through the sequence of fire, exhaust, suck and fire and you will see what I mean!

Rubbish, I'm sorry! Well it used to be...

Well - explain why it is rubbish?

I had a Golf 1.6 TDI DSG for the last two days, pretty decent car - actually tempted me to swap the Yeti in - diesel and DPF are no good for my type of driving.

It definitely feels much nicer to drive than the manual version.

On another note, might be a personal preference, although I am very impressed by the DSG, I can't help but think (after spending a lot of time in stationary traffic) that traditional torque converter autos are more suited to crawling traffic. Nonetheless, the DSG is very very good (and I don't need to shift to N like a normal auto which drags forward, as D also engages neutral).

My opinions on this thread:

The 1.2 is great until you're going uphill with 4 people and a boot full of stuff. Then it gets a bit out of it's depth to be honest. Had a 1.2 Yeti for a week and got about 34mpg where I get 36-37 in my 140TDi 4x4. Depends on driving style I guess, I do lots of motorway.

I came from an Octi and both cars have their advantages...the Octi uses a bit less fuel, has a bigger boot, comes with a full size spare wheel that fits UNDER the boot rather than taking away half of it, and (in my opinion) rides much better. The Yeti's harsh ride in comparison is taking some getting used to and not having a spare still concerns me a bit even though I've only had one flat tyre in 17 years of driving.

I have a 140 4x4, and I think if they did the Octi Scout in Elegance trim with all the bits (leather, etc.), I would definitely have considered that. Having some minor problems with my Yeti and never had any with the Octi.

However, I much prefer the high driving position of the Yeti, the fact that I can basically turn it into a van for work (even though I rarely needed to even fold the seats on the Octi), and the car generally has a more "fun" feel to it compared to the really quite mundane (if excellent) Octavia.

I do have a few rattles (one big crack behind the speedo that happens over big bumps and scares me a bit) and my Octi had none. Might just be discrepancies between those particular two cars though.

Had an Amundsen in a courtesy Yeti for a bit and found it slow to respond (particularly address input took forever with loads of input lag) and didn't like the menus much either - on top of that I get the impression the Bolero has far superior sound quality. I MUCH prefer my Garmin 3760, especially as the HU on the Yeti is too low to be easy to see when driving. Garmin's portables can be had with lifetime map updates (which are updated quite often), are very quick and exact, and have the bonus of being able to take them from car to car, use them on holidays when you have a rental, etc.

Both are great cars...keep testing and see which you prefer. :)

That's an interestingly low figure for the TDi, and an interestingly small difference to the 1.2TSi, IMHO. But not at all surprising (I get ~40mpg from a 1.9PD 129TDi Octy Est, 44 indicated, on motorway use, so a blunt Yeti with a more efficient 2.0CR 140TDi prob should be slightly less)...

My Octi 1.6TDi averaged 48-51 on the MFD, and didn't really feel underpowered.

I did a long night run down some country roads in the summer, and the MFD showed 59mpg average. That was awesome. LOL

All the figures I quoted above are MFD, so probably WAY off. Hahahahaaha.

Im a bit worried now of the suggestions of being underpowered. im pretty much ready to order (ie today) but losing my nerve a little.

Reports of being poor on the motorway and underpowered when ladened are not what i wanted to hear but rather hear them now than experience it myself after shelling out thousands.

Im torn now... The 30 min test drive doesnt reveal those kinds of short comings.
