High engine revs in tis weather

Featured Replies

Since this cold spell has started my TDi is idling at 1000rpm just about all the time. Its not doing a DPF regen just idling faster, occasionally it will drop to 800rpm but not often. Sometimes, if I blip the throttle when stationary it then drops too! Is this normal or is another dealer visit needed? Thankyou.

is it just not taking longer to warm up? cold weather can affect the idle but shouldnt when the car is warmed up.

No, its idling long after warm up at 1000rpm.

Hi Lemon, how long are you trips when this happens? It does take a while for the engine to warm up properly in the winter and that's probably all it is but also it may be electrical related ie: short trips, lots of electrical power being used, heated windows, mirrors, air con, fans, lights etc and if the car senses the electrical load and the battery needs more power it will run faster at idle. I doubt you have anything wrong.

Mine idles for a bit longer when started in the mornings - but drops to 800 ish and then ready to drive off. Just the cold I guess.

My 105 diesel is the same currently.

The idling speed was normally 800rpm when warm in the late summer but now is often 1000 even after a 10 mile drive.

It also idles at 1000 (but very unevenly) when I fill up with 'super' diesel. So I always buy standard Shell or BP stuff now.

All very strange.

On the temperature thing, I am disappointed that with all the fancy electronic gadgets, the car doesn't have a water temperature gauge. Ideally, I would like to know the oil temperature and pressure as well. This time of year it is easy to assume that when the blue light goes out the water AND oil are both warm but this is not the case. The oil takes much longer to warm up which affects both the oil pressure and the presence of condensation in the oil

I would like to fit one or both grill covers at present but without a proper temperature gauge (or 2) can't risk overheating the engine. This is the sort of thing I mean:-

so that the engine warms to a better temperature. The same company also offers a cover for the upper grill.

The grill covers also improve mpg because there is less air being dragged round the engine.

Regarding revs, I wouldn't go over 2000rpm till the engine is properly warm because of the oil not being fully warmed up.

You may find the cold weather can cause the engine to run richer due to the denser air taken in and the piking sensor may adjust the timing slightly to compinsate.... :smirk: ?

Got exactley same here on a 1.6 CR 75HP. I thought it was doing a regen every 20 miles. Just drove 10 miles from work at 65mph, stopped at morrisons. Tick over 800. Got out of morrisons after 25 mins and back to 1000 tickover, no blue light. Whats going on. Any ideas anyone.

Me again.

I just had to rush out & do family taxi duties. 800 tickover at start of journey. 1k when we got there (2 mile drive).

800 tickover when I got back home. Could it be battery running lower as normal in winter and higher tickover to top up?
