How do you drive you TDi.........

Featured Replies

Well almost every forum I go on these days there are threads on how poor MPG is and DPF problems.

I havnt got a TDI at the moment as I have a 1.8 TSi but I had 4 TDis before this so only 16 months ago.

I would never expect to achive the published MPG figures as they are done under strict conditions.

My last TDi was a BMW 118d which had official figures of around 64 mpg but I never saw more than around 48mpg but I drove it like Id stolen it.

My previous Octavias where fine and all achived 48-55 mpg.

I always find if I drive the TDis briskly they are fine on MPG but if I drive like my grandad it was poor.

I think a lot of TDi drivers think that they are going to break them if they go over 25 mph around my way.

I think there would be fewer DPF problems if people just drove the cars a bit harder rather than changing gear at 1500 rpm.

So do you drive it hard and what do you get out of it.

Depends if I'm on works time or my own :D

Ranges from setting the cruise control at 56 on the motorway to driving briskly.

With 9300 on the odometer my overall average is 47.3.

Well, I am a grandad. This one is my first tdi. It's likely to get me my first speeding points as well. I drive it briskly, usually 80 on motorways (I know) Find it hard to stick around 30 in towns, it really needs 3rd gear for 30mph I suppose. It has 22000 on the clock now and returns a true 56.5 mpg by calculating it. On the computer it reads about 5% more. Enjoying surprising the occasional boy racer though.

Occasional smell of DPF (3 times in 2500 miles) Could happen more often but leaves the fumes behind, no warning lights. So I guess DPF is working normally.

I drive like a grandad normally and I see 55+mpg. If I push it that drops to below 50. With diesel you have to drive it carefully in order to get anywhere decent mpg otherwise it's better to have a petrol. The most I have seen is 78.5 mpg out of my 1.9tdi 110 that was over a 10 miles journey mostly on A roads but about 1 mile through town, I was driving like the pope though.

Depends on how much fuel I have to get somewhere sometimes I drive to the nsl and last night I got 60mpg over a 50 mile run, but other days driving around town I boot it a bit because the Turbo is fun! So I get around 40mpg :)

I agree that if you drive fast it still is better on fuel than a petrol and so long as you have the right Tyre pressure and other bits like good fuel it'll be nice on consumption

I start off with 2000 rpm changes when its a little cold but then I change between 2-4k rpm depending on my driving style on that particular rout! Anything after 3500-4500 rpm just makes little progress and lots of noise!

I also like hearing the Turbo whistle when I'm driving through town :-) makes me happy lol!

Thanks,

Leon

I shift at 2_000ish as a rule, and normally get mid-40s commuting (worst possible conditions for fuel economy bar sitting idling, including a hill that needs 2_000rpm in 3rd or 4th on high throttle) and mid-50s on a run, often at 60<cough>mph on single carriageway.

I normally put the car on cruise on the motorway receiving high 40s.

But then travelling to my girlfriend's house is all country lanes, which are fun... Not so fun for my economy.

On average over 1,900 miles I'm getting 42.8MPG.

I can regularly get my Tdi 130 to 17mpg when going around a 13 mile toll road in Germany.

It has also managed 69mpg on the way home following a friend in a big slow land rover 4x4 thing at 70 mph.

Mine's at 130k, regularly serviced, sweet as a nut.

Commuting to work in the wee small hours when it's minus one, about 38-40mpg.

Cruising to Southampton centre and back is an easy 43mpg.

Motorways are anywhere between 41-50mpg... depends how enthusiastic I am!

Typically try and keep the engine turning at 1,200rpm for the best figures, letting the car pull itself along on its own torque also works- stick it in sixth and, without touching the brake or accelerator, she stays at a steady 35mph- even up hills! So far I've managed to go 2.2 miles touching nothing but the steering wheel... :giggle:

I get 55mpg mixed driving and 60mpg on long journeys and no wretched DPF to worry about.I tend to drive around 1800-2000rpm but obviously higher on motorways.I am still getting used to the old school PD engine having previously had multi valve common rail engines ;).If i had a 6th gear that would be even better but the 5th gear is very tall.

I get about 55mpg and drive mostly like a grandad ,most of my journeys tend to be short around 3-4 miles 2 or 3 times a day with a longer journey around 30 miles on a motorway at 80 ish at a weekend , i have had no probs with DPF aprt from the usual sensor failing ,I have now put 30k on the clock so i must be doing something right , also i cannot say that i can recall a regen taking place , if it has i never noticed ,i dont use expensive fuels i just fill up at Sainsburys . i feel that a lot of the DPF probs are down to how the car is driven .

According to my understanding the DPF catches the soot generated under hard/heavy throttle , as my old Toledo only smoked when flooring it in a low gear i work on the basis of keeping throttle settings light and letting the gearing/ revs do the work , its fact that an engine thats not labouring uses less fuel because it runs a lighter throttle opening , with the gearing on the Octy its easy to be in too higher gear .

I generally drive in a lower gear running around 1500 - 2000rpm and on a light throttle , if i need to accelerate a light prod gives me the bang i require for normal driving .

If i now start having any problems you can beat me with whatever comes to hand .

^ sound advice IMO.

I do a 8 miles trip to work, average 40mph if no traffic or 35 if busy/I'm late. On a run I'll get 50ish mpg, when playing 30ish maybe? Not sure what similar cars would manage that and still be as quick/fun as my fabia!

So bit of a mixed bag then. I guess when I get it if I just drive as I normally do it should be fine on the economy front and I should have no DPF issues.

Normal driving on M6 and M62 so about 50-60mph gives me the mpg below. It falls to low sixties if the road is clear and I'm doing the speed limit.

Trip computer says 54. Not bad for my car.

If taking it steady I rarely have to go over 2000 rpm or if I do I only have to go to 3000.

Generally just let it pull itself along using the torque from 1500-2000rpm.

On a run make sure I'm doing at least 60 before using 6th as it labours a bit otherwise (I have the older much longer gearbox).

Most of the time though the turbo gets used and I will use about half throttle to get the turbo spinning.

On the motorway we generally try to drive 70. Soon to fit my cruise control too.

And when we go to Germany we just go for it and keep up with the traffic... well... overtake most of it... ;)
