remap- convince me

Featured Replies

Never been able to make up my mind about getting a remap done or not but im finaly starting to seriusly think about gettin it done after having a few play the other night and everyone being suprised by the skoda ; )

The map il be getting would be a seddox stage 1 map but there quoting 215 from stage one alone plus id probably get a decat and downpipe at the same time if the map prevents the emissions light comeing on.

So come on lads just need that extra little bit convincing to get it : )

I've never had a remap but do want one in the future. The only thing that puts me off is that sometimes one tuner is recommended and then the next minute someone else is the dog's nuts. It almost seems fickle.

Yup its a competitive market, but saying that iv got a fair amount of tattoos and nothiang can be worse than the studios all saying there better than each other suppose everythings just the same and its a matter of personal opinion and experiances

Think your vRS is quick now? A remap will be like having a new car! The midrange improvement is brilliant and the power is insane.

Obviously I only have a tuning box but my midrange has definitely improved! Lots of friends have remaps on their cupras and they fly!

Any tuner you get it done by, Revo, Shark, Jabba, APR etc etc will be worthwhile. Obviously people are going to recommend who they use as most have a decent experience (I recommend TMC for anyone wanting a removable solution) so don't worry that you won't get the best.

im gonna go down the tmc tuning box route i think.

+1

The biggest bonus from any remap is the increase in mid-range power! Although it's nice that the top end power is increased too

A remap is 100% worthwhile.

As you know from my Jabba vs Shark Thread that Ive had both but changed because i wsnt happy with the amount of boost that i was running on the Shark Map.

A few of the things you need to consider before remapping:

Are you all about power? If so are you willing to uprate other parts such as intercoolers etc to control the extra heat that comes as part and parcel of extra power?

Have you considered accelerated wear and tear: Bear in mind that having a jump of 75lbft in the midrange whilst feeling phenominal on the road is a lot harder on the clutch. So accelerating from low speeds in hugh gears will wear the clutch prematurely, so you need to consider using the lower gears to preserve the clutch etc.

Mapped cars need better servicing: If you running your ar with a lot more power you need to consider how often you are going to service it? NOrmally you service every 10k, but you might want to consider dropping the oil and changing it every 5k(I do this), also spark plugs will need changing more frequently to maintain the correct spark otherwise your wasting your time and you'll end up with misfires.

Fueling a mapped car. Alot of power comes from advancing ignition timing amongst others on a mapped car. So you need to consider are you happy to fuel it with 99ron all the time. Some companies will provide a map for use on lower octane but whats the point!

Few points to consider with your potential tuner:

What experience do they have? These 1.4TSI engines are extremely temperamental, especially with regards to temperature control and exhaust gas temperatures. The tuners also have to open up the ECU to get at the circuit boards in order to bypass the encryptions. Some tuners have more advanced equipment to access it and require no soldering kit at all. Others solder wires on in order to access it before removing them after?

Do you plan on further upgrades? Its alright getting a map fitted to the car, but when you decide to uprate your exhaust or turbo at a later date, can and will youur tuner support that. Will they be a no cost upgrade, small cost upgrade or a full cost map to update.

Will they provide a map tailored to your needs? Some tuners have maps developed already that they think you want and when you turn up that is what you are getting. Other tuners will develop the map to exactly how you want it. ie your wary of clutch wear, so they can limit the power/torque in the midrange but still give you the extra power, you want the thrttole modulation changed and they can do it etc etc.

How much? What ever you do, dont buy a map because its cheaper than another!! R&D costs lots and lots of money for the big companies and they put hours and hours of testing into their work. But just because a map is expensive it also doesnt make it a good map.

Adjustable maps? There are only two options onthe market that will allow you to adjust maps. REVO and APR. REVO are known for pushing the envolope that little bit more, and have popped their 1.4TSAI engine on their demo car, however they are no very familiar with the causes of the problems and solutions with this engine. APR are known for reliability and not pushing things over the edge and are probably the biggest VAG tuner in the world. They are also making a big comeback charge in the UK now after moving in alongside VWRacing in milton keynes with big plans. These adjustable maps allow you to switch between stock performance modes(not stock maps), 95, 98, 99 and 100Ron race maps depending on your fuels etc

--------------------------------

From what i gather about Sedox Performance, they are a company with many members around the world that all link in and help one another with mapping. ie, guy turns up at a garage for a map that they cant provide, someone within sedox might provide one and voila, you have your map.

That might be wrong, but thats how it was explained to me on the GTI forum by guys in sedox UK.

Tuners to consider

REVO -Adjustable and have mapped LOTS of 1.4TSI- But its a generic file that they have developed.

APR -Adjustable and have mapped LOTS of 1.4TSI- But its a generic file that they have developed.

Shark Performance- Generic file developed on my car, but i had it removed as it was very high boost. Did go like the clappers though :o

Jabbasport - Have mapped a few 1.4TSIs and each one has been a very customised setup to the customers requests.

There are others who offermaps for the 1.4TSI such as

MRC

P-Torque

etc but i have not heard of anyone having one yet so its an unknown quantity really.

Now, i guess im slightly biased but there are two stand out choices for me. Jabbasport and APR.

Jabbasport

Jabbasport provide all their own in house maps and custom tune(one of the few companies left that do this). Two 1.4TSi examples for you.

EG1

Jay of seatcupra.net wanted the extra power but really didnt want to risk destroying his DSG box, so asked Jabba if they could limit the midrange, keep the peak torque level no higher than stock, but maintain the torque for a longer period, and he wanted the same top end power as al the other maps.

His mods are Jabba custom map and Forge intake.

Cupra187to211.jpg

They gave him exactly what he wanted.

EG2

Me!! My shark map went like the clappers but ran really high boost which i wasnt happy about(or aware of until i logged it) but i asked Jabbasport for a stringent requirement.

-I wanted the throttle map changed to emulate that of a throttle cable and a 1:1 ratio of pedal to throttle.

-I wanted a similar midrange to the Shark stage 2 map,

-I wanted slightly more top end, somewhere in the region of 215-225hp depending on the before after results.

BUT

-I wanted this done with much less boost so that i could have some longevity and mechanical sympathy for the drive train and turbo.

AND

- I wanted them to look into the viability of upgrading the turbocharger to a hybrid with regards to heat, high pressure fueling and injector duty cycle.

This is Jabba custom, Pace intercooler and decat downpipe

They also managed to give me exactly what i wanted. As you can see between the two graphs there are huge differences between the midranges of our two cars but we had different requirements.

APR Motorsport

These are my other preferential choice. you can switch between all your map settings via the cruise control stalk in seconds. They develop all their own software and hardware to work in harmony with each other in house. No other tuners do this, they all get hardware from external sources. They are a huge global company and will have mapped hundreds more cars and have more experience than what you will find from UK tuners because their market is so much bigger, hence so is their experience and knowledge. Also they have a reputation for not pushing the maps to far and refusing to offer more power if they dont think it will last.

Just re read the thread title.

it says convince me, and my post prob doesnt do that.

Do it!!!! these cars are crap as standard. They go like the clappers once mapped though, absolute bets money you can spend on a car B)

Excellent post sy from reading that APR would be my first choice especially as over the next few years i plan on going all out on it once i get off the apprentice wages but the main problem is the distance i would have to travel.

The garage that does the sedox is run by a couple of guys from my works mate and they can get me discount which makes a massive diffrence as i cant afford too much.

My other thought is do i really NEED more than 180hp? And do i really want to invalid the warrenty as i would struggle to pay for any damage it would cause especially as my car was the press car and would have been battered around the track from the minuite it was made which opens the way for future problems

I think your comment about if you really need more than 180bhp sums it up really.

You either want to experience something different or you don't. If you're in 2 minds about your warranty blah, blah, blah, then forget it.

If, on the other hand you want to experience the VRS Fabia as a completely different car, then get it re-mapped and lowered. You'll soon forget all about the hang ups you're thinking about now. You just have to take that 'leap of faith'.

I've had my last 3 cars re-mapped with absolutely ZERO issues. Modern cars are standard power within pretty big tolerances. Like fuelling etc, the car is designed to be used Worlwide and use fuels of all qualities. We have pretty decent fuels here in the UK and therefore the real performance of this engine can be realised quite safely.

If you want to go over say 210bhp, you will be changing components to accommodate the power hike, but I'm sure you appreciate that.

Get a revo sps box so you can in theory hide the map for warranty issues? Problem solved! It also has 2 settings for different quality of fuels and a total engine immobilisation mode. That's what I'm getting in a month or so :-) hope this helps

Ahhhh feck it al see how much money iv got left come pay day and get it booked in down at SOS motorsport for the sedox treatment : ) and if i get my wheels sold its getting h&r springs and a rarb aswell : )

Good lad you Wong be disappointed, I know I won't be

Won't

While its on the dyno i might get them to try it with and without the revo filter to see if it makes any diffrence

DOOOOOOOOOOO IT!!

I've lost count of the amount of times I've said this

THE SPS SWITCH DOES NOT HIDE THE REMAP FROM A DEALER. THE STOCK SETTING IS STILL THE REVO REMAP BUT WITH BOOST/TIMING AND FUEL SETTINGS REDUCED TO MIMIC THE PERFORMANCE OF A STOCK CAR

Couple more questions for you sy as you seem to be the man in the know : ) can u bypass the lamda sensor with a stage 1 remap. And also does it make the exhaust reek off fuel with a decat?

Remember all the extra stress on the drivetrain can also be controlled by your brain and your right foot.

My MX5 has now done 80,000 kms since going from about 120 bhp at the rear wheels to 234 albeit not just with a remap. It drives like standard around town and uses no more fuel (33 mpg) or brakes or tyres than standard when driven on the road. It's a different matter on the track when all the optimisations to fueling and airflow allow it to do 9.9 mpg. The only issue possibly associated with the extra power has been a tendency to overheat (on the track only) which is now sorted with an oil cooler.

The V6 diesel Superb I had was suddenly a sports can when remapped. The brakes coped but the front suspension struts turned into floppy things. Fuel consumption improved when the missus drove it but could be painful if I was having fun on country roads.

Every other VW group product I drove with a remap was a big hit with me - even a 115 bhp SEAT Alhambra Tiptronic was way better with a remap.

So, as already said, JFDI.

Custom remap all the way  that's the route i am going down with my latest car.

Yea bit best way of putting it, I doubt you would have any problems with that and warranty. In going for it anyway with my car under 3 years warranty

I still think I'll wait until the warranty is up mainly if something does go wrong. Knowing my luck it would. Also by then tuners will be better again at offering power upgrades. I'd like to be able to go to one place to get a custom map with intercooler, radiator, intake and exhaust. After what Si has said its looking like Jabbasport at the moment.

I'm sure with other tuners offering the likes of hybrids the other tuners like Revo an shark will have to look into it at some point.
