remap- convince me

Featured Replies

I think this is a nice thread to post my reflections about re-mapping mine. So, with respect to vRSy's questions my answers would be:

1) No, I am not after the ultimate power that I can get from this engine.

2) No, I am not prepared to uprate intercoolers/radiators/intakes/plugs (ok maybe plugs is easy).

3) No, I am not be prepared to pay a huge bill if something is blown up and skoda claims it to be down to my tuning box/remap for example.

Why am I considering it then you may ask?

I am enjoying myself everytime with other drivers reactions to how quick this car is. Now, I cannot imagine how much more fun will I get if the car is even quicker than it is now. I've driven quicker cars before but I haven't had a quicker car under my ownership so the stock power is so sufficient for me, to a point where sometimes I feel I don't have the opportunity to exploit it as I should. But! I like the idea of keeping a little surprise under the bonnet for just these rare occasions where the stock power wouldn't be enough.

Bottom line is, I can certainly live with stock power/performance but If a stage 1 upgrade by either a remap or a tuning box, can be obtained independently (without needing additional upgrades to be on the safe side) then I would jump to it. I've contacted companies about a stage 1 remap and they said nothing else is required but I was not that convinced. So, the question still remains...

For now I think the power is adequate for me too. I've found a few times it has more than enough power in the twisties to keep me happy. I just think in 3 years time it will be like having a new car again. It isn't the most powerful car I've driven but the power is much more accessible the majority of the time.

Just popped into the garage there and they said theyd need the car for a few hours to check if theyd be able to map it as hed have to check with the software writer

oops

So are Shark adjusting the maps boost levels?

I'd be interested in a map that gives 200 bhp and 200 lb/ft, in my mind that means its not pushed too far, however - for an engine this size some say it may be at its limits already.

Ben has said in the post above that they can/will/do custom map so they should be able to do it for you. Im sure if you asked for a maximum boost level they could do that as well.

200Hp is about right for stage 1 anyway. They would just need to wind down the midrange. Post #7 shows the differenc between a full fat map and a custom map(stock bar intake) with limited midrange.

Longevity and reliability is surely the key for a Generic map?

It starts to lose the above for custom maps and such like as the owner is after more than just a bit more power? ie lots more powaarrr!

37Hp gain!!!! Not a chance at all. I dont think its thats a gain. what i think is they are trying to sell remaps based on 'figures'. Consider the average remap customer. Which map will he chosse. One with a 20hp gain, or one with a 37hp gain........

Consider mine. 178hp std on both of my dyno graphs. Stage 2 mapped 210hp (shark), Stage 2 custom Jabba (216hp). So thats a gain of 32Hp (shark), 38hp Jabba.

BUT I have a decat exhaust and an intercooler and radiator!!!

What are they doing that everyone else isnt? Jabba have said that my turbo is now at its maximum safe running power for longevity. An intake will free up some strain on the turbo trying to suck the air in, so i should get gains there but not to much more <10hp.

Jabba stage 1 custom with Forge intake. Peak gain 24Hp.

Cupra187to211.jpg

Revo stage 1. Peak gain 22Hp

dyno1.jpg

Shark stage 2. Peak gain 32hp

img004.jpg

Jabba Custom stage 2 Cant be bothered to find the graphs, but they are in this thread. But peak gain of 38hp.

Theres a trend here.

Stage 1 cars expect around 20-25hhp (realistically)

Stage 2 cars expect 30-40hp(realistically but these will have a couple thousand of mods such as exhaust/intake and intercoolers.

You have to ask yourself if they are quoting figures like that, have they actually seen these before and after figures of this and can they prove it, have they even mapped a 1.4TSi or are they just blagging, and if this is true, how hard must the map be running to achieve this!

cheers sy it was your previous posts that made me think that it was demanding too much.

im writing an email to sedox just now to ask about the remap for it. so any questions you think would be worth asking? also is it 1.6bar that the std. turbo can produce?

Whats the peak and average boost?

How many have they done, are there any reviews IN THE UK.

Dyno proof WITH before and after curves then look into the data to make sure they were done together and not 'bodged' graphs

Also ask how much to upgrade to stage 2 at a later date

thanks yet again, thats the email send will let you know when(if) i get a reply :D

Sorry for the dull question but I can't tell what's good or bad about a dyno graph apart from the higher figures. Where's best to have power and torque for example. Is it better to have a smooth, progressive line?

The area underneath the curves are what makes a fast car.

Your looking for a smooth curve that is gradual to the redline. What you dont want is a big spike of power/torque as it gives false figures and can mae traction and wear&tear an issue.

All the graphs in this thread so far, i would consider to be smooth. Your looking for sudden flatspots and dips in power etc

This graph(suburu i think) i would consider to have a very large flat spot in the power delivery at 5000rpm which would be very notable

Just had the email back from sedox

Hi Stuart,

The software development for the 1.4tsi was carried out by REVO. The power figures are based on cars using 98+ron fuel.. Reliability has been an issue for some tuners, but we have not experienced any problems to date with any of the 1.4 TSi engines that we have tuned, infact we have increased many cars reliability due to altering the software to work around the inherent missfire problems that this engine suffers from.

There are no charges for map upgrades, the software includes 3 performance modes suitable to be used with most bolt-on modifications.

This product is only available at our Head office, it is not available at any SEDOX dealers. If you require any further info, feel free to ask.

So thats a revo map then. Sk how you switch between the performance modes, if he says there is an SPS switch with three settings then you will have revo software. If im right, i believe you are speaking to Dave at PDTuning who is the UK rep for Sedox tuning and is also a REVO dealer. Might be wrong though ...It has been known lol!!They are still talking crap about the figures though. Of the 4 revo stage 1 cars i have seen with before and after Dyno curves they have all made no more than 25Hp peak gains. The ones who 'make more' dont have a before graph to compare to and just compare the mapped result to what they expected it to read when stock. Essentially, generous dynos

Funnily enough it was a guy called david so that would be your man probably. The no charge upgrade at a later stage sounds good though. Will ask him a few more questions aswell

I went to my local revo dealer today, yes I know that revo quote higher than actually achieved BHP gains. They plugged my car in to get the codes needed to request a trial map (which don't quote me but is 70% of the full remap gains) can't wait to see what happens...

Sorry part of that story is that nothing has been changed as of tonight but tomorrow they are ringing me back.

Wilko whats the quoted revo figures? as the map im looking at is a revo asfar as i could make out from the email i recived and they quoted 215

Yea that's the one but as explained those figures are not what you would achieve on a dyno

Lol :-D

Looks smart though emoticon-0148-yes.gif
