Freeing up seized coilovers

Featured Replies

OK, so I've got a set of Weitec GTs that are second hand.

At the minute they're wound right down to the bottom, and I want them nearer the top, but they're completely seized.

Any tips on the best way to free them up?

I've used nearly an entire can of WD40 on them now with no joy :(

I'm booked in to have them fitted tomorrow and really want to get them sorted tonight,

Could try vinegar and or coke

Put then in a bucket or tub that's deep enough to cover the nuts. And buy the 5l bottles of wd40 or cheaper equivalent and leave them to soak in it for a few days

Wire brush the threads until they're cleanish, Then use a bit of heat on the adjusters, Not too much though, You want them hot but not glowing Then spray with WD40, And hope the thermal shock cracks the seal, Good luckemoticon-0148-yes.gif

I've managed to get the rear adjusters free.

The fronts are still stuck solid.

I did think about this initially, however the front adjusters are plastic :(

Lots of boiling water!

Get in touch with somewhere that can get replacement spring seats, and cut them off..

Kw stock the replacement spring seats for £15 each

Well I've had to cancel at the garage for fitting them :(

I managed to get one about 1/4 way up, but the other one is still stuck solid.

I'll give it another go this weekend.

Also managed to do this whilst trying to remove the droplink that was still attached ....

I used MuckOff to free off my Weitecs and then some WD40 type spray and a nylon brush.

WD40 is not the best stuff to use...........get some proper penetrating oil........and apply/leave to soak/apply some more/leave to soak/then undo..... B)

I'll get some plus gas or something similar this weekend :)

Dont know if this is worth mentioning I also used a butter knife to dig in between the threads to dig out crud.

My mates leaves his in petrol to free them? Worth a go maybe?

Get a can of PlusGas. It's a dismantling fluid which is exactly what you need.

Result, Motosave sell it and they're only round the corner from me. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I'll give it a bash tomorrow providing it's not too cold

Well PlusGas and a wire brush have certainly helped.

Managed to get one about 1/2 way up, and the other about 1/8 way up, which is certainly better than before.

I'm going to leave them to soak, then "borrow" a shed with a big vice and hopefully I can get them done :)
