Private number plate help

Featured Replies

A plate cant be put on a car were it would make the car look newer than it actually is i.e. you can't put an XX 1 XXX plate on a car 1st registered in 2005.

You also can't transfer a plate off a vehicle that does need an MOT - I once had a potentials valuable plate on a farm tractor but couldn't sell it.

A previous car I owned, had the registration number P169 SGP, and the V5C actually stated on the document that this plate was non transferable. Never seen it before when owning a car, or seen it since.

When you buy a plate from the DVLA, you do not own it at all. The DVLA still own it, and you basically buy the right to display that plate. The DVLA can revoke or withdraw the plate at anytime they want as its not yours to keep, this is why you need to pay them a fee each year to keep it on retention. Once you sell a car or insurance pay out, then plate transfers along with the car to the new keeper and they then have the right to display that plate.

You only buy the right to display it on the vehicle. If the vehicle changes owners, so does the reg number...
The private registration actually belongs to DVLA and they sell you the right to use it.
The Number Plate is Not Yours, it's the DVLA's. . When you " buy " a personal plate you are paying for the privilege to display it on our car.

If you flout the law, miss place or alter the plate, you may have it taken off you so you loose the right to display it.

That's that point covered then.

The plate is owned by the DVLA and they sell you the right to use it on a vehicle.

Lose the vehicle, lose the plate. ;)
