Has my turbo failed?

Featured Replies

Driving up hill when lost all power, loads of black smoke. Thought it was a boost pipe come off. Got to top of hill and started to gently drive to a place I could stop. Before I did that the engine started to rev by itself, loads of smoke... Managed to pull in to a pub carpark and stall the engine. Checked fault code and its p0299. Sounds terminal doesn't it :(

underboost. could be a few things. any strange noises?

Its failed! And big time. Just taken it off, loads of oil in intercooler pipe from turbo.

Exhaust turbine wheel has seized!! Along with two exhaust studs with snapped off...EGT temps too high?

And the compressor wheel is broken and loose, with several broken vanes.....

Heres what my turbo looked like after it **** itself.

Sent the broken turbo back to Turbo Dynamics, who confirms it failed due to "turbo overspeed" causing an orange peel effect on the back of the compressor :(

Caused by sudden overboost, which can be down to either leak in boost pipes, faulty MAF/MAP sensor, or broken VNT mechanism but as the VNT mechanism was so broken up they can't tell if this caused the problem...

So going to have to get a new turbo, might as well go for a MD376.
