Skoda Octavia Greenline II

Featured Replies

Hi there, I'm new to the forum but thought I'd post about my new Greenline. I've got to admit that even though I've only had it a short while I'm very impressed. It's my 4th Octavia and I've had nearly the full set (Ambience, Elegance, L&K and now Greenline).

I must admit that I was in two minds whether to go for the VRs or the Greenline (chalk and cheese I know), but as I'm now doing 25,000 miles a year it just seemed a no brainer. I've had the optional rear parking sensors fitted as an extra having had them previously and becoming quite reliant on them, and even though I was told by the dealership that these would only be audio it has turned out to be the OPS system.

Major differences between my last car which was the 1.9TDI PD elegance - Well there are quite a few! No jumbo box with aux input, front speakers only, no auto wiper, front fogs or foldable door mirrors. I'll be honest and thought I would miss them, but I've got an SD card with all my music on and the Bolero reads this much quicker than the last unit. The other omissions are really quite small and I don't notice they are not there when you consider the benefits that the car brings.

On picking the car up I had to drive out of Liverpool city centre in rush hour traffic, and although the start stop system is a bit unnerving to start off with I managed nearly 75mpg. To put it into perspective, driving in the same style last week I was getting only 45mpg. Now I admit that sometimes I can drive like Miss Daisy, but even so I never seem to get less than mid 60's which is frankly awesome. At this rate I'll be saving nearly £80 per month.

So for those people who are out there who are wondering whether or not to go for the Greenline because of the lack of certain bits of kit or power don't, spec it up as you'll be saving that money in fuel!

It's a tough choice, fuel ecomony or equipment.

I could live with a Greenline if it had the front fogs/DRL's and armrest.

I also do 25,000 miles/year and as it happened the Greenline was out of my budget so I ended up with an older vRS.

80mpg sounds appealing though, enjoy

Your's will loosen up a lot more, I have a Greenline 1 and mine is doing anywhere between 80-90 mpg on my 45 mile commute (both back roads and motorway).

I wish I was getting anywhere near that from my Greenline 1! I've got to the stage where I drive so slowly I get overtaken by caravans and still struggle to better 50mpg on a run.

:(

No better than 50 mpg? That doesn't sound right. My bog standard 1.9PD rarely drops below that, usually around the 52 mpg mark.

I'm somewhat underwhelmed & my 03 1.9TDi would do much better too. From what I've read on here though, disappointing fuel consumption is the norm with the latest cars; manufacturer's figures are better but real life figures are worse.

So my nice shiny eco-Octavia averages about 45mpg on pump diesel where my old one averaged about 55mpg, driven faster, remapped and running on Tesco Value veg oil.

The car runs fine though and is showing no faults. I'll have to see what it's like after it's next service (38k or so), but chatting to the local dealer it appears that my experience is typical and a lot of owners have commented.

70 or 80 mpg would be nice though and would go some way to justify the extra money I paid to get a Greenline

50mpg? That's not right, over the last 32k miles I have had a max of 52mpg a min of 36mpg and an overall average of 45mpg out of a 2.0 TDi pd scout! A Greenline should do much better than this!

I should point out that these are accurate figures, not maxi-dot figures which regularly report 10% more.

I'd get it looked at mate, all is not well there!! Id struggle to get mine down to 50mpg! Done a run at 75-80 and town driving this morning and did 62mpg! And I know my maxidot is bang on from working it out the old fashioned way.

I picked up a brand new greenline II mid Jan and so far am averaging 55mpg(according to computer) after nearly 3k miles. I don't drive like Miss Daisy mind you. Most of my driving is long distance motorway so I'm hoping the economy picks up as the engine loosens off. Having said that I just drove from Leicestershire to mid wales (100 miles 2/3 motorway 1/3 B road) as carefully and smoothly as I could and got an indicated 64mpg which I think is pretty good.

It seems that smoothness is definitely the key to economy in this car, but it hasn't dropped below 50mpg even when pressing on which I think is pretty good for any car.

For reference I had a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso with the 1.6hdi for three years before the octavia and this averaged 50mpg - this was from a taller car which was about 200kg heavier. However, if you pressed on in this car it would drop to mid to low 40's.

Trouble is that the car starts and runs fine, no warning lights, no errors reported and apparently running the current firmware so where to start?

Dealer response is that the car appears fine and that I shouldn't expect to get close to official consumption figures (even though I did on the last one). I suspect that unless they find a cat wedged in the air box during the service it'll get a clean bill of health.

Last night did 30 miles of fairly spirited driving out of town (all A road dual carriageway mix), but only really to speed limit (on GPS do slightly over on speedo) and got 45.

Will take my more usual approach of 5-10 below the limit on the speedo and gentle on the throttle on the way back today and see how it goes.

Gotta speak up here,

I've also splashed out on a Greenline 2 estate. Not that amazed with the mpg, certainly not up to what i was lead to believe.

This one is an ex-demo car that i got 9 months old with 12k on the clock, so should already be loosened up a fair bit.

Just had a problem with the turbo, stopped working and dropped the car into limp mode, after a bit of drama got it back to the dealer.

They've reset the fault codes and it's working again, no sign of anymore trouble.

I got it back from them and the first thing i noticed was the power/turbo boost was lower between 1.5-2.5k revs, it still accelerates and the turbo is "working", but it's not got the get up and go it used to have. It's still under warranty and i've taken it back, but they don't seem to have an answer to the reduced power. I find it just too much of a coincidence that the turbo went wrong, and once "fixed" (they reset the fault codes, nothing more) it now has less power than before in the power band.

Slightly underwhelmed with Skoda, bought it for the brand reliability and economy, don't think i'm getting either.

I picked my Greenline up in October last year and have over 7K on it. When I drive it on the the German Autobahns at approx 85mph I am getting an average of 50mpg. Taking it back to the UK in April, so will be interesting to see what I get having to stick to a speed limit on the motorways.

Getting between 60 and best 82mpg on runs to and from Salford. Best economy on motorway about 60-65mph anything above this the mpg falls to the bottom of the range. See link below for details. The mpg falls dramatically if you drive it hard - but that's not why you buy a Greenline is it?

I bought last year and my criteria was a 1.6 diesel, aux socket and ESP. The choice was a SE Plus (no ESP) or a GreenLine II (no Aux) but when they looked the stock vehicles the Greenline had a Admunsen Sat Nav (no Boleros) so It had an AUX and ESP. Don't really miss the rear electrics as no hardly ever sits in it. Would have liked to have Bluetooth.

Mine seems to give low 50's when motorway cruising, although i do tend to cruise 70-80. Might try reducing that to see if i get a return in economy.

Does using the cruise control ruin the economy? Have a long drive coming up this Sunday and would quite like to give it a good try out.

I haven't noticed that the cruise control reduces economy ( I know some people say it does) but perhaps it the journey I do that is reasonably flat. You should notice a difference if you drop 10mph and do 60-70mph.

Tested it.

Did a 320m round trip today, used cruise control set to about 63 mph and got an average of 60mpg.

Is that 63 on the speedo or 63 on a GPS (as 63 on a speedo with be about 59)?

The speed was on the gps unit, the speedo is about 4mph over this speed.

Yeh well my SE+ has the 2 litre 140bhp diesel engine and I get an average of 55mpg according to the maxi-dot.

Given the ongoing problems my greenline is having with turbo boost pressure, i am reluctantly close to agreeing that it's not all it was sold to me as.

I think i should have just got a standard Octavia with the 2.0L diesel engine, everything i've heard so far points to better reliability, power and negligible difference in fuel economy :-/

My Greenline II has now covered 7k miles. Did a trip from Leicestershire to near Luton today and got 70.4mpg mainly with cruise set at 70mph (was a long section of 50mph limit on m1 mind you which probably helped). On the way back via Milton Keynes it reduced to 68mpg for the 200 mile round trip which is still very good. The engine seems to have loosened up now and I think the warm weather also helps.

I managed 68.3mpg (on the Maxidot) for the 62-mile cross-country round trip this evening, and after filling up could apparently go another 825 miles. I was however driving well below the posted limits, holding up traffic and doing everything I could to avoid breaking and accelerating.

Decent figure at last, but pretty antisocial to achieve it. Due service no 2 in a few days (37,500 miles or so) so I'll see what happens after that.

I think some of you guys need to head over to the "1.6 tdi poor fuel consumption" thread on the Fabia forum and read some of the later posts by Estate Man. Trying to baby the 1.6 into good economy will do more harm than good...but he gives much better explanations as to why.

  • 2 months later...

Just bought a demo Octavia Greenline II with 800 miles on the clock and 4 months old, now done 2000 miles, I love the car good solid constuction and super economy with free tax. BUT! I have a problem with the ride comfort,I know it is a frim ride with low profile wheels, should this mean a rough bumpy ride with vibration through the seats, seems worst at 30-40 mph. My wife feels sick and it plays havoc with my bladder. I have no pleasure in driving the car and the thought of a long journey is a NO! NO!

The dealer tells me this is the way this car is and it is normal, yet I cannot find one single complaint online, infact the reviews say very comfortable ride and limosine comfort.

I have a plan of action but need some feed back can anybody help please?

I'm sorry, I thought I had moaned about the ride (on the gl1 at least).

Yes, the gl I'd lowered/stiffened compared with the rest of the range, as apparently reducing the ride height helps consumption.

I presume that out mighty beer possible to fit the springs and dampers from one of the other octavias, but over not investigated to be sure.

With 40k on the clock now I think I've got used to it.

Just on case I missed stuff, my 3 moans were -

1. Poor consumption compared with my old mk 1 1.9 - sort of helped by me now driving like my dad.

2. Boomy cabin compared etc - sort of helped by me ripping out the entire interior of my new car and lining the shell with dynamat.

3. Harsh ride. Learned to live with it, but the suspension only works when driving it like you stole it. which doesn't suit the car, and really screws the fuel consumption.

And don't get me started on the stereo..
