Can I disable headlamp washers?

Featured Replies

As Per....It's probably been covered but a search reveals nothing. I find it irritating that I have to drench the entire front of the car when the lights happen to be on just to give my screen a quick wash. Anyone managed to disable the source of the two fire hose deluges on a temporary (or otherwise) basis? and as a consequence aid the country wide water shortage. (I do realise I could turn the lights off momentarily).

PS. They provide ample resources for drowning my bodywork as there's a GALLON of water in the bottle! No wonder dealers charge an arm and a leg to top it up.....their water meters must be industrial strength.

Tread carefully with this one, I asked the same thing not so long ago and the response from some...ouch .

Think the answer was no or that I shouldn't want to anyway .

Pull the fuse out, it only does the washers.

Just make sure before you go in for service you either tell them or pop the fuse back in because it logs a fault code that will be picked up when it's plugged into the diagnostic machine.

I would not do it myself but I do agree the water useage is high-I seem to get as much water on the bonnet as on the head lamps!.

Do you have Xenons?

Do you have Xenons?

I would imagine so if its got the washers fitted. :)

They all have the headlight washers :giggle:

Hmmm, odd. No other marque in the VAG range have washers and non Xenons (that I am aware of)

If the OP has Xenons, then disabling the washers is very bad, he'll get a slap from VOSA if stopped.

If your windscreen is dirty and requires a clean, then your lights are equally as dirty and need cleaned also. Why anyone would want to dissable this function beats me,after all it only occurs after every 5 squirts off the windscreen. Perhaps it's to save a few pence on screen wash.

No, it occurs on the first one, and then every fifth....

My Mk4 Golf has washers and non-Xenons!

My previous Octavia 2006 model 2.0PDTDI L&K DSG Estate did not have xenons, but it did have headlamp washers......

The problem with washing the bonnet only occurs at low speeds. Do it at high speed and you barely notice it. Problem normally occurs when you use the car for the first time in the dark after it has been raining and the windscreen is dirty, so you want to wash the screen and the bonnet get coated....My feelings are that it is a pain, but if my windscreen is dirty, the my lights probably are, it is just a pain when it happens and you have a freshly cleaned caremoticon-0140-rofl.gif

For some reason the Yeti does.

Ours is an SE without optional Xenons, but still has the washers.

As discussed on the original spat on this subject if the screen is dirty enough to need a wash surely the lights must be equally so and if the car was clean at the start of the journey it would surely be a little itsy bit unclean if screen needed washing and as stated after the first squirt it only repeats every five times. I personally can't see the problem and it's quite a neat thing to do. I suppose no manufacturer is going to please all the people all the time but as far as I'm concerned the Yeti ticks all my boxes

So what?

What Andy says, below!

The other option is to get someone with VCDS to alter it to 1 : 10.

In all honesty I hadn't seen the previous discussion and when I typed 'windscreen washers' in to the search box I got a nil return.

It hasn't got Xenons, it's an SE 1.2

I haven't used it much at night in the conditions that needed repeated washing so hadn't noticed the ratio of washes mentioned. The car hasn't had too much night driving since I've had it. We have another car which gets used at night more for one reason or another (and that hasn't got drenchers).

Re. some bright spark telling me I'm, maybe, pennypinching....then I can see how the last spat started. So I'll ignore that one.

And someone else telling me if the screen wants washing then the lights do too.....After 44 years of driving (nearly thirty of them driving blue light vehicles... you know, the real emergency service ones)...and getting by without headlamp washers on my car...I think I can work out if my headlamps need a wash. I can't be the only one who wants to just clear a thin hazy spot of dust reflecting in the low sun.... or whatever... on the screen without the aforementioned dousing. But, honestly, it's not the end of the world...I only asked. I love the car and really just wanted to know if they could be turned off and I'd missed a Maxidot setting or some-such.

Anyone point me to the "discussion" please, if I promise not to resurrect it :D

Came across this - dunno if it would work cos it's for an Audi. Maybe a VCDS user could advise further.

Personally I wouldn't disable even though I was a tad bit hacked off when it did it to me the garage just after I had dried the car - had dribbles down the rear window and made the mistake of pulling the wiper stalk instead of pushing!

Nothing worse than dribbles down your screen :giggle:

This seems to work on some Yeti's but not on others (unless they aren't doing it correctly?).

On my both my Octavia's with headlight washers a very quick pull and release of the wiper stalk diables the headlight washers allowing you to then spray to screen to your hearts content...

As has been mentioned the washers are more neccessary for xenon equipped cars as dirty lenses can make the brighter xenon light more likely to dazzle.

On Yeti's without xenon's but with the headlight washers just pull the fuse as mentioned above, job done.

Thanks to those who offered helpful replies. The quick pull on the stalk didn't stop the headlamp wash for me but, again, ta for the thought. Might have a look for the fuse but otherwise will either live it or just turn the headlamps off if it's safe to do so and give the screen a rinse....at least we've covered the topic (again, it seems!)

As mentioned on post last week - my headlamp washer fuse blew due to ice. And after having found the fuse I'm tempted to leave it out, as they do annoy me on sunny days when all I want to do is clear a few dead insects off the screen, not spray washer fluid all over my headlamps and bonnet, fenders etc...!

Could you point me in the direction of the fuse please.

It's in the manual..... (drivers side panel, middle one of the 20A's...)

Not for Xenon users.

Many thanks for combined advice here. I'm now suitably defused and my bonnet, bumper, roof, the car behind and the ones either side of me all, now, remain dry when I wash the screen.
